Some help for a noob

Once nice thing about dashing over to Darnassus is that it opens up a number of Darkshore quests that will be fast and easy at 19. You'll find the same situation in Loch Modan, but I like the Darkshore quests better. :)

Hints for the Darnassus area:

The bank is in the big tree in the middle of the west side. The exit to the NE newbie areas is to the east. There is a weapon trainer; any guard will direct you to him.

To get out of Darnassus and off the World Tree, walk through the pink portal west of the bank. Run down to the griff master and get the flight point, and then take the boat to Darkshore. The griff master in Auberdine is on a platform beside the inn. Don't forget to get that flight point. :)

There are lots of NPCs with quests in Auberdine. There's also a forge and anvil there.

There are some quests up and down the shore finding beached sea creatures. They give good reputation, and are nice if you want extra credit for heading in a direction you'd be going anyway. See the NPC on the griff master's platform.

To get to more challenging quests in the Ashenvale area, take the road from Auberdine south to Astranaar, the flight point in Ashenvale. You can also get some quests in Stonetalon, which is accessed through a tunnel southwest of Astranaar, just east of a lake with a NE outpost (Nightsong Retreat?). There are two or three NPC's in Astranaar who will give you quests to go there.

Once you're in Auberdine, it would be a good idea to take the other boat ride to Menethil Harbor and get the flight point there, even if you're coming right back to Aub. It connects to Ironforge and is a major pathway from Ironforge/Stormwind to Kalimdor. Menethil is also a launching point for level 20+ quests.

Just FYI, the boat rides are free and run both ways every few minutes. There's one from Auberdine to Menethil, Menethil to Theramore, and the short run from Ru'theran/Darnassus to Auberdine. There's also one in Feralas, but you won't be seeing that one for a bit. :)
At first I thought, "Mind control satellites? No way!" But now I can't remember how we lived without them.

Hi.

Several new questions, 1 a multi-part.

1) I have noticed that some 1-H swords say "Main hand" in the discription. Does that mean that they can not be used in the 2nd hand, and I need a sword that does not say that in the offhand? Also, how does damage stack for dual wield as opposed to 2-H weapons? How is it calculated? Do I get 2 attacks instead of one, so I can just add the damage from 2 weapons and figure out the miss ratio?

2) I need some advice as to where to lvl at this point. I am lvl 22 atm.

3) If I see a monster's discription and instead of it's level it has "???" in it, does that mean it is much much higher that I am, sort of off the charts for my level?

TIA as usual.

Main hand can only be used in your right hand. One hand or Off hand can be used in the left. Damage for dual wield is on a per attack basis with the offhand having a higher miss rate. I've not played a dual wield warrior since Beta so I'll let the experts chime in.

Get thee to Darkshore on the other continent good sir! Take the road from Loch Modan north to the Wetlands. Grab the flight path and then head over to the right most dock to wait for the boat. Follow Bun's instructions from there.

As Tal said, "Main Hand" means right hand only. "One Hand" is right or left, "Off Hand" is only left. Your specials damage is determined by your weapon in the main hand. When dual-wielding, the main hand damage stays the same. The offhand damage is half of the weapon's damage, I believe. Both offhand and mainhand have the miss percentage raise from 5% to 24% given equal level/weapon skill -> though specials still miss 5%.
Trade yourself in for the perfect one. No one needs to know that you feel you've been ruined!

So on the average, does dual-wield perform twice the number of attacks as opposed to 1 weapon, not counting the miss rate of course?

Also, in your opinions is it worth it for me to try to solo Deadmines for items and XP, even if I can't finish it at my lvl? I'm about to hit 24. It'd be best to party of course, but with my schedule being what it is (evenings on PST), that is not easy and I am not sure I want to go pubbie for this, AND I know I missed one last weekend.....

Yes, though weapon speed becomes a factor. Since 1-handed weapons (especially daggers) tend to be faster than 2-handed, it can end up being something like 3-4 times the amount of attacks. Smaller attacks, yes, but more often.

Ok, that is good to hear. OTOH, with the lower damage weapons, crit hits are way lower too... Can you get a crit hit from your off-hand?

Yep. If you can hit with it, you can crit with it. ;)

Thanks.

How about that Deadmines question? B)

Edit: If I am using a green lvl 23 2-hander, and I switch to 2 green one-handers of a comparable lvl, would I be dishing out more damage, generally speaking?

I don't think you can solo the deadmines even at 24 - if you don't mind cheese Shalandrax can rip through the Deadmines in about an hour. It also doesn't hurt your XP to badly to be cheesed through DM.

Strictly IMHO here...you probably could do it, but I don't know if it'd be worth it. The first few parts of the instance will show most of the problems at your level. While not linked...just about everything in there is a runner. You lose control of a runner a couple of times...and you will be in a world of hurt. Give it a try, and see what you think. You should have a good idea of if you want to or not by the time you get from the very start of the Deadmines to the instance gate proper.

Again imho, you may just be better off going back out into the world and questing around.

Your damage would be approximately identical. A Blizzard developer posted a while ago that they intend for "no-shield" options to be roughly the same for damage - about 20% more than using one one-handed weapon.

Maybe we can work something out over the weekend. I have a level 24 druid and a level 20 rogue who happens to be looking to complete the defias set.

So, I think I might just try to see what I can do in the Deadmines solo tonight, as I hit 24 last night. This has nothing to do with the weekend possibility, Tal and co. :)

Do I just go in there from Westfall's entrance (to which I escorted the Traitor), or do I talk to the innkeeper in Stormridge, or what else do I have to do?

If I die, do I have to run to the body as usual, or does the instance end, or....?

If I res at the cemetary, and deside to forget about it, do I have to reaquire the quest again? Can I even do it?

What is the difference between a Dungeon and an Instance, as illustrated by the monster info shown here: http://wow.allakhazam.com/dyn/mobs/zone68.html and if they are not the same, how do I get into an Instance?

Good luck. I really do think you'll need a group to have fun with it; the elites would be either too dangerous or too boring. :)

Quote:Do I just go in there from Westfall's entrance (to which I escorted the Traitor), or do I talk to the innkeeper in Stormridge, or what else do I have to do?

Just walk in to the entrance the traitor pointed out and follow your nose down. The straightest path to the instance is done by always turning right ay any choice. Eventually you'll get to a railing beyond which is a swirly blue portal - that's the instance proper. Jump over the railing and run into the blue swirlies, ignoring any miners that may get in your way - they can't follow you into the instance.

The Thistlenetter quests are done outside the instance by bearing left. There's a section full of elite undead. These quests can and often are skipped in favor of just getting to the instance stuff.

Quote:If I die, do I have to run to the body as usual, or does the instance end, or....?

You have to run from the graveyard to the beginning of the instance (the blue thing again) and you'll rez there. Anything you've killed in the instance will still be dead, although some will respawn afer a given time regardless of you dying or not. If there is a respawn, you'll have to fight through them again to reach your previous point. Fortunately, bosses stay dead.

Quote:If I res at the cemetary, and deside to forget about it, do I have to reaquire the quest again? Can I even do it?

Death has no effect, you'll still have the uncompleted quests in your log, taunting you, torturing you, speaking in quiet whispers about the tasks you have left undone. But I digress.

No difference, Alla's nomenclature is confused.
