Potion of the Empyrean Bow of the Undead Crown
#1
I never did download the 1.09 patch; I still have 1.08. This was probably fixed; I don't know.

Anyway, I was in Single Player with a level 14 or so Rogue. I had just received and ID'd the Empyrean Band when I decided to start a new game. So I put the Empyrean Band on, loaded up my Bow of the Dead and Immolator, and started a new game.

When I looked at my inventory, my Empyrean Band had turned into a mana potion.

And not just any mana potion. This was a Unique Potion of Mana that called itself the Undead Crown, was life stealing, and had an armor class of 0. Fully drinkable, too; I don't know what effect it might have had besides restoring mana.

I played the new game, got myself another Empyrean Band, and later on decided the monsters were getting too tough, I should start a new game. This time, my Empyrean Band stayed an Empyrean Band, but my Potion of the Empyrean Crown was now calling itself the Bow of the Dead, with +0% chance to hit, +0 dexterity, +0 vitality, -0% light radius, and altered durability.

Maybe if I start another new game, I could get myself a Potion of the Empyrean Bow of the Undead Immolator.

Interesting. This is a very common bug. It happens to the quest items in single player when you change games. But... Blizzard lists it in the change log as having been fixed by the 1.07 patch, and the bug list here reflects that. If this is happening to you in 1.08, I imagine it would still happen in 1.09.

Incidentally, doesn't the different walking algorithm of 1.08 drive you insane? I don't imagine many people pick that patch to play by choice. It would be my last choice from 1.04 through 1.09.

can you explain that, i have a hard time telling the difference between such subtle things. The walking algorythem?

She said loaded up, I'm thinking trainer induced glitch above and beyond normal errors, perhaps used the trainer for the wrong version, and reintoruced a glitch from 1.07?

An algorithm is a step-by-step process to solve a problem (or perform some task). The method "Diablo" uses to determine the path a character takes between point A and point B is determined by some algorithm. Blizz changed this algorithm between patches v1.07 and v1.08 to fix a bug, but the way it affected walking annoyed so many players they changed it back in v1.09. (The bug was less harmful to enjoyable gameplay than the altered walking.)

It sounded to me Lady Vashj was just packing up between games. Remember SP allows you to store items in town between game sessions. It's when you make a New Game that the gear disappears.

Screenshot? That would make a pretty good STSI submission.

How long has that caves one been up now Lemming?

When beset by doubt,
Run in little circles,
Wave your arms and shout.

I do, in fact, have a screenshot from the first change, but it sucks. Seriously. You can barely even tell I have a potion on my hand instead of a ring, and it's nearly impossible to read the stats.

I will post it later, if you insist.

Nightwind: Lemming of Glory is right, I was picking up the stuff I left in town. I may have been guilty of using trainers once or twice, but only in Diablo II, never in Diablo.

Here's the best way I can describe the walking thing. Since Diablo uses large tiles for positioning (kind of like a chess board tilted on an angle), there are only 8 directions you can walk in a straight line. To go any other direction than in these eight straight lines, the game has to make a decision on what route to take the character. In all version of Diablo except 1.08, the character will move diagonally first and then orthagonally to get to the spot (I'm speaking with regards to the game tiles and walls, not the computer screen). In 1.08, the character moves orthagonally and then diagonally.

Now, both of these options get the character to the same spot in the same number of steps, so it's not a case where one system is really superior to the other. However, the 1.08 system caused 2 problems from a practical standpoint. The first problem is, some of us had been walking characters through this game for many years and thousands of gaming hours before 1.08 came out. The original way of walking had become intuitive, and 1.08 just seemed very awkward in general. The other problem is kind of a specific example of this awkwardness. In 1.08 if you want to make a quick diagonal move, you have to click on a square that is exactly diagonal from your character. This is not as easy as making an exactly orthagonal move, because you can't use the walls or lava rivers as guides. The result is that people trying to run around a monster often got sent on a path than ran them right into the monster instead.

Hello all,

-does any one remembers what actually was the reasoning behind this 1.08 "walking fix"?
-In other words, what did Blizz tried to achieve by implementing this behaviour? Some bug perhaps? Reduce desynch?

I started a new game. I now have a Potion of the Empyrean Bow of the Undead Cleaver - +0 strength, unusual item damage, and altered durability.

It appeared to be a botched attempt to fix the "unhittable when walking horizontally" bug.

Which is dead easy to fix in a million other ways that doesn't affect anything else in the game...

I would imagine that changing the order that hit detection occurs for the case could probably be a start. I haven't looked at it in so long I can't remember how it works anymore though.

The 1.08 patch just showed that Blizzard had no clue how Diablo's code actually works and didn't care to figure it out.
