Video Card Fried motherboard?

hi all,
I was wondering if my video card can frie my motherboard. Is it possible? what if your motherboard can only accept 2x agp slot and your video card is a 4x/8x. Can you bust your MB?

My guess would be that if it's the wrong card type you'd get the no video card present startup error and the machine won't turn on.
Although it is within the realm of possibilty since 2x, 4x and 8x all use different voltages (unless the memory in my head fried my brain and I'm remembering that wrong).

Either that, or it will run it at 2x AGP, if the card can support it.
