It started out innocently enough.
I began to think at parties now and then -- to loosen up. Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker.
I began to think alone --"to relax," I told myself -- but I knew it wasn't true Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time.
That was when things began to sour at home.
One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother's.
I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?"
One day the boss called me in.
He said, "Listen, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job."
This gave me a lot to think about.
I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking..."
"I know you've been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!"
"But Honey, surely it's not that serious."
"It is serious," she said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking, we won't have any money!"
"That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently.
She exploded in tears of rage and frustration, but I was in no mood to deal with the emotional drama.
"I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche. I roared into the parking lot with NPR on the radio and ran up to the big glass doors...
They didn't open. The library was closed.
To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night.
Leaning on the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster.
Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker.
I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting.
I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home. Life just seemed...easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. I think the road to recovery is nearly complete for me.
Today, I registered as a Republican.
All alone, or in twos,

Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands.
The bleeding hearts and artists
Make their stand.
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy

During the first 8-9 lines of your post, I actually thought you were talking about yourself, regaling a story from your everyday life... I guess I don't have to worry too much about becoming heavy thinker... :P

There is a growing body of conservatives who find themselves alienated by the Republican Party's discrepancy between actions, words, and the long term interests of the US of A. A buddy of mine sent me a three page paper explaining their grievances, back in September, and encouraged me to join him in voting for John Kerry in protest of the inconsistencies, mistakes, and confusion in Republican leadership. He resigned his commission in the USAF two years before he had intended to, he was so unhappy with our political leadership. His assignment was to have been an instructor at the Air Force Academy.
Anyway, he was very upset. He agreed that the Democrats don't have many good answers either, but felt a need to punish the Republican leadership with his vote. (As do a number of conservatives.) EDIT: I think he mistook me for a Pat Buchannan lap dog. :P
There is no Perot, there is no, TR, no Bullmoose Party.
Nader? Harrumph.

I took this as a joke thread. I thought it was quite pun-funny. As long as jokes are the only things being hurled across the aisle we are in pretty good shape. And I would label myself as an independent conservative who generally finds the Republican candidate the lesser of two evils :lol: .

Don't get me wrong. I am not a huge fan of Republicans these days. However, to me it is not a question of "lesser of two evils". It is more a question of 1) Not good but still sane and 2) Insane.

Well, I bet you that my spelling in English is significantly better than your spelling in any language other that English, but I happen to be fluent in another language and I bet you that you are not. I also do not always have the time to check my posts for spelling, so if sometimes certain words are not spelled correctly.... deal with it.
Our founding fathers might indeed have been liberals, but their version of liberalism drastically differed from ours. They would be spinning in their graves if they knew that you were equating them to the liberals of today.

For the record, I speak two languages fluently. American English, and Southern English. Yes, there is a considerable difference. There are parts of the South where people are speaking English, but you wouldn't understand a word they are saying. And they wouldn't understand a word you were saying either. :P It is another language.
And I will go on to say that I have loved (some of) the Republicans in the past. I am totally disgusted by the Neo-Cons of today.

I read a lot of history, enough to know that a lot has happened between when those guys were alive and doing things and now. The joke was about how:
1. We can't possibly know their thoughts for sure.
2. If they really were watching the country, they would have taken in all that has happened between now and then, so opinions would have changed.
3. If you did take their opinions straight out of 1700's, they would be pretty useless to us because of a number of changes in the economy, politics, size of the country, world conditions, etc.
