Fishing in Zul'Gurub

FISHING IN ZUL'GURUB

A most unlikely thing can be found deep within Zul'Gurub -- a high level fishing quest! Past the tiger boss and down the hill to the water's edge, you'll find Pagle's Point (which The Core's Yilona found by the purely genius move of falling off the ledge into the water below), named after that "extreme angl'n" and perpetually drunk Nat Pagle, who writes all the fishing books and trains people in artisan fishing. At the Point, you'll find an abandoned camp with a clickable tacklebox that gives you a quest to return Nat Pagle's Measuring Tape to him. You'll also find some barrels that will give you Darkmoon Faire Reserve, which can get you really drunk. Apparently, this had once been a favorite fishing spot of Nat Pagle before he was driven out by the trolls.

A couple members of the party wanted to do this quest right away, so they quickly ported out and traveled to Dustwallow Marsh to talk to Nat Pagle. When you give him the Measuring Tape, he explains how you can catch a really big fish in Zul'Gurub by fishing up and attaching five Zulian Mudskunks to Nat Pagle's special Mudskunk Lure (that he sells you for 1g).

Back in Zul'Gurub, we cleared the Hooktooth Frenzies from the water in front of the point. Unfortunately, they're not tameable.

Syren then set about fishing up the Zulian Mudskunks from the river in Zul'Gurub. In order to catch them, you have to land your lure in one of the special "Muddy Churning Waters." If you do, however, you get Mudskunks every time. Note that you have to have 350 skill fishing to fish in the river, so make sure that you bring lures with you. Also, the churning waters are like mining or herbalist nodes, so they run out of mudskunks. Syren had to fish in two different churning waters to get the needed five mudskunks.

Back at Nagle's Point, Syren placed the mudskunks on the lure, and the lure immediately appeared out in the water. A few moments later, Gahz'ranka appeared. (According to Nat Pagle, Gahz'ranka *loves* the taste of mudskunk fish). Yes, this boss is exactly what you're thinking of -- well, unless you're thinking of the Blackfathom Deeps boss. But if you were thinking of the boss in Zul'Farrak, then yes, this is exactly what you're thinking of. He even has the big aoe "toss them into the air and make them all take a boatload of falling damage" ability.

It's a fun and chaotic fight, but it isn't too terribly difficult compared to the other boss encounters in Zul'Gurub. He dropped Tigule's Harpoon as you see here, which we were disappointed with. Supposedly, he also drops some really good caster items that even Molten Core geared up players want.

But despite the loot, it was just fun to experience the encounter and see high level fishing be used for something in the end game. By the way, there's also another spot, in the imps area, where you need a potion made by an alchemist to summon the boss, so make sure that you bring along some of your guild's alchemists to get the recipe when you go.

Ahh, good ol' Gahz. Critical Mass killed him for the second time tonight, and got his epic drop: Foror's Eyepatch. Not a bad result for a little bit of fishing.

A word to the wise: do what Mongo shows here and clear out some of the patrols around the area and the fast-respawning fish before you get Gahz. Tonight, he did his AoE toss and some of us ended up pulling adds. One hooktooth frenzy actually came out of the water and chased a healer around on land, constantly evading.

Having visited Zul'Gurub for the first time last sunday, I was quite baffled indeed as the raid leader asked us to do some fishing and people happily equipped their fishing rods and started angling as it would be the most normal thing to do in an instance *g*

It is a funny bend on the developers behalf to make of all things a high fishing skill a requirement for a boss fight. I hope you do not have to cook somewhere in the future :D

I'm not an addict ... maybe that's a lie.

Woohoo! Good times ahoy. We will have to try this sometimes.

I'm actually hoping for a cooking event in an instance. 300 cooking, baby!
