BC Hunter Builds?

Engineering. I've been a DS LWer on my shaman since day 1 and I can say it was the biggest mistake I ever made. There are no BoP items, and no LW required items of note (and I haven't seen any in BC yet either) so you are better off getting someone else to make the stuff for you. Bombs, target dummies, trinkets, and bullets > all imo.

If you are really wanting to do LW, then I'd say tribal or DS. The devilsaur, and BDS sets are both pretty nice, if you can get the patterns.

Don't forget this is BC, and LW really gets some nice stuff now (according to Blizzard):)

I'll believe it when I see it. :P So far the really nice stuff is a set bonus setup similar to the ZG crafted sets. I've been keeping my eye on the beta crafting forum looking for a shred of hope, but so far nothing.

If there is exciting LW content in BC then the Beta testers haven't found it yet

I suggest you simply delay the decision. You can be 300 Skinner/300 LW without specialising. Once you know what the level 70 recipes look like pick from a position of awareness rather than taking pot luck.

I wouldn't be led too much by things like Devilsaur if I were you, we really don't know that there will be a level 70 equivalent. It would be a shame if you picked a branch and then discovered it's the Bear tank leather branch

I thought you can level LW past 225 or 250 only with specialization, no?

But then it's a beta test char anyway, and useful leather/mail stuff is very rare in the auction houses at the moment, so I might simply pick the DS branch:)

You can go all the way to 300 without specializing. All you miss out on are the specialization only patterns.

One reason why you want to keep LW in BC ist certainly that you can craft gear with sockets like the Heavy Clefthoof Vest or Felstalker Breastplate, and related pieces.

Do we honestly think blue crafted pieces that are BoE are going to last compared to the rest of the end game gear? I see no reason to keep LW at all so far. Our touted "better than ZG enchants" -> yeah, Tailoring has the better than ZG ones.

Tailors can now make armor patches?

Tailoring:

Leatherworking:

There is no known LW "enchant" that isn't easily outdone by an enchant, spellthread, or faction in the expansion.

Yeah, but the two spellthread tailoring pattern both require Exalted faction, plus you need to specialize in that Spellfire Tailoring branch. The LW pattern are max. Revered faction (or no faction), and you don't need to specialize for them because all LW pattern are general LW stuff.

Yup, those are awesome pieces, but hardly a reason to have LW. You could just as easily make them on an alt and mail them to your main. All you would lose would be the set bonus if you happened to be wearing all 3 pieces. Which is really my issue with LW, no value to the character who actually makes the stuff.

Does it really matter how you get to it? If LW doesn't offer something end game, it'll be even worse than it is now, where all it offers is resist sets (remember, Blizzard said they're deemphasizing them come expansion). There is certainly no "better than ZG enchant" seen yet. There is no upside to being LW by the known stuff. Wait, I'm sorry, there's one. You can make a Riding Crop and be a little faster while mounted. That's the only BoP recipe shown so far.

Don't forget Skinning was the only gathering profession not improved in some way. Hell, it's the only profession not even listed in their "Professions Update".
