Huh, didn't know this place still had threaded view, and I'm sort of sad to hear that. If I do multiple responses it will look stupid (and be rude to) the people who read it as one single thread, but if I put it all in one response then it almost invariably wouln't be in the proper thread. I prefer forums that have a standard viewing mode, instead of making it switchable like that.
As for your comment about lurking, bah. Generally if I haven't posted within a week of joining a forum I'm not interested in the topic and don't plan on sticking around. Posts like "I don't have the time to read this so gimme a summary" are rather rude and annoying, yes, but you don't have to lurk for weeks to avoid that! Then again I'm a fast and voracious reader, so I've usually read a page or two of threads within a week. Still, I think if someone has a comment to make, and they've read the rest of the thread, they shouldn't be afraid to make that comment just because they haven't been around for a while. It's fairly rare to have multiple threads on the same topic, unless some of them are already fairly old (in which case I wouldn't expect someone to be aware of them in general), so I don't think that a new poster needs to have read more than the thread they're responding to in order to contribute to the discussion generally.
Then again I'm the type of person that can easily read something with no punctuation (like goldfish's post), and generally dislikes the idea of enforcing a strict code of netequitte.
Anyways, that turned out longer than I expected. The point I originally wanted to make was that I think Nicodemus was too harsh. I don't think it would accomplish anything to elaborate much, so I'll just say that my problem is that he was specifically aggresive and insulting while as the other posters where merely critical and vocally annoyed about something.

I don't care about leechers, as long as they don't get me or others killed. If I do public games, I don't worry about drops either, cuz I don't stop to pick them up, due to hackers/pk.
As for the grammar/spelling stuff: get off this guy's back. Not everybody is able to type perfect posts. If ya don't like, don't read. Or ask nicely to clarify. Imagine that.

Old Elric returns...
Quote:4) Please post in real English. If English is not your first language (or even if it is *cough*), we do not mind spelling or grammatical errors...we do not mind typos from anyone either. However, we do not appreciate '|337 5|o33|<' or any unnecessary shortenings of English words - common abbreviations such as 'lvl' or 'dmg' are fine though. If you do not follow this rule, you will be flamed or ignored completely.
It's been in the etiquette since its original format in 2001, and was an expectation on the Lounge since long before. If you can write in correct English, then do it - else you're just getting up everyone's nose. If you cannot, that's fine: we cannot expect you to do things you cannot do. End of story.
May the wind pick up your heels and your sword strike true.

Thats quite unfortunate, but I must agree. I can respect and understand poor grammar and spelling if English is your second language, but it is unacceptable for English to be your first language and still continue to use "|337 5|o33|<" or other forms of shorthand. Maybe I'm a bit biased, I've recently tested myself and been found to type consistently over 100 wpm when I don't have to think or backspace much. The truth is though, I used to be a "|337 5|o33|<3|2" and used all the internet jargon and shortcuts. I changed myself because the communities that I wanted to be involved with required that it be so, and that was enough for me.
This community requires that you speak in full sentances, with at least a semblance of grammar. Abide by the rules, or I hope you have a very good flame proof suit.

P.S. To Elric, I don't mind keeping old Elric around if it keeps the lounge clean and it stays away from the LoD Beta period... *shudder*

Look up the word 'norm' in a real dictionary.
*pause while you look up the word*
Now that you might comprehend what I am about to say . . .
One of the informal norms of this forum, one that was somewhat formalized by Elric's guides being officially sponsored, is that all posters will adhere to generally correct and coherent written presentation of the thoughts they share here with other members.
If you do not support that accepted group norm, then you don't belong in this group, nor do others who do not feel bound by the group's norms.
It really is that simple.
Your puerile little jibe of 'If ya don't like, don't read' implies that members here should condone substandard behaviour by a member of the group: sort of like a group of Boy Scouts condoning one of their troop flashing the local Brownie troop. We Lurkers don't care to have sub-standard anything in this little corner of cyber space. It borders on rudeness for folks to demonstrate how little they care about the rest of the group -- the readers, the audience -- by their blatant lack of care in crafting their posts.
If you don't like that, friend Luna, then you know where the door is. I am not lowering my standards just because yours are on the floor.
EDIT: atrocious spelling and rhythm. (Note to self: 'Preview Post' is your friend.)

Hi Occhi,
Oddly enough, in the book I'm reading, I just went through a section where the author states that "belonging is an active verb". Apparently one has to make an effort to be part of a community.
As you just pointed out.

It is no accident that when you take that concept and apply it to a group of two, a marriage, the result is: that takes effort as well. Anything worthwhile does, as you know so well.
P.S. I still have the pix of your hounds on the dresser, by the way, just because they look so happy on that beach. Woof.

Note to self- spell check every word typed ;)
Sorry about my post, i didnt realise people felt that strongly about grammer. I'm used to gbr-1 chat room on Diablo 2 LOD, which is a very fast chat room. You have to touch type and use abreviations.
The reason for most of my mistakes is that im a poor writer. Whether its a minor case of dyslexia, i don't know, but as the issue is split, i view it like this: the people who do not care about grammer aren't bothered if its in a post or not, yet the people who do care are bothered. therefore, using good english in a post pleases all, right? :D
I'm sure there are a few mistakes of mine, but i have tried to tidy this up as much as pos(ible) :D sorry, couldn't resist a small bit of cheek.
Also there is the small matter of time. I am taking AS exams, which means i do not have alot of time to type. If i type short hand without checking for mistakes and bothering with grammer, i can post a post as long as this very fast. Doing it like this does take alot longer, but in a few weeks my exams are over, and i will give you perfect english, or as near as i can get :P .
I make it that this post has deviated slightly off the topic. i was interested in Lurker's views. For or against leeching/leechers in soft core diablo?
I hope that Blizzard would put a level restriction on nm and hell games, the same one that is on the Ancients. That or make it that you had to complete certain quests to progress to the next act.
I accept advice gratefully, allthough i ask you not to pick up on my spelling mistakes, as they are not intentional, or maybe they are a type error. Thanks again,
Kier

Before you begin to moan about my mistakes, they will lessen in number. I allready notice an "its" <it's> and a few "i"'s <I>.
Hopefully though you can read my posts without disregarding them for a poor atempt. This is just a quick one, no essay this time, just don't want to read through 40 posts about grammer again :P .

Does the combination of your pic being an Iron Cross and your sig saying something like (my German is poor), "the world will realize we were right", mean what I'm suspecting it means?
Just wondering,

I think you got the translation correctly deciphered, as it reads to me thusly: "One day the world will realize we had it right" or "we had the right of it." Had what right? That the Me 109 is a great fighter? That the Slavs were untermensch? That it is easy to pound on the French? That Italians are crappy allies? Or that The Final Solution was a sound course of action? Not sure what is inferred, though others might be able to clue us in as to the context of that little quote.
As I recall, the Iron Cross is not exclusively a Third Reich symbol. It was inheireted from at least the Kaiser's Reich. The Iron Cross was a medal awarded by the Kaiser, and was also awarded by subsequent officials in Hitler's Reich. Hitler earned, IIRC, the Iron Cross second class while serving on the Western Front. Rommel also earned an Iron Cross, First Class, for his actions in Italy. (Or was it his Western Front exploits? Grrr, I forget.)
As I recall, the black cross came in either the more Maltese and flared version you would see on the Red Baron's Fokker Dr.1 aircraft, or the straight edged version that you would typically see on a Mescherschmidt Me 109 fuselage, such as his avatar.
What I can't remember is whether or not the straight edged version was used during WW I, and my memory is to blame. :o Maybe Rhyddie knows the anser to this one.

I say treat it like sex. Really. If all the party involved in the act are mature and consensting, and better yet happens in the privacy of their own passworded games. Then it's really no one's business but their own. If it they're pushy and rude, and always insists on doing it in public games, then you or they are free to leave to do it solo. Or try finding a better playmate.
>That or make it that you had to complete certain quests to progress to the next act.
I believe Bliz already has that implemented. They're called Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto, etc etc. :)

Well, after the flame war, let's return to the original question....leeches. Leeches suck, literally. They suck blood and the only way to get rid of them is to pull them off, pour salt on them, or BURN THEM! Burning is fun!
But seriously, I never really cared about leechers, I always brought baddies over to them and got called every profanity in the book, plus some. "Oh well," I said, and continued to bring monsters over to them and kill their characters. I was mean. They just "got in the way."

Some how, despite the fun of burning them, I usually manage to burn myself too.

In my experience non-native speakers of English tend to have spelling and grammar superior to native english speakers. Only non-native choice of wording is awkward to native. Being non-native, they don't experience the cultural colloquialisms, phrases, and nuances of a native english environment as much. People tend to be very diligent and selective when using a language foreign to them--not wanting to embarass themselves.

That sets the standard very high, but it is not the quality but the attitude that matters.
"You'll have to deal with my poor writing because I refuse to try and make it nicer"--is unacceptable. That attitude will only get you ostracized.

Hail Drasca,
In many cases, you are quite correct: people who have picked up English as a second language often do have commendable spelling and grammar, meanwhile those who learned it natively frequenly write in a very lazy way - if they even know basic grammar to begin with! However, you also get non-native speakers who have only been learning for a little while: they are those that were spoken of :) They have a perfectly valid excuse - yet odds are they are working on improving that!
