A riddle to ponder
#1
My friend works at a theater and if they get riddles right they get free movie tickets. The one they have right now is "what two questions can a person never answer yes to?". The clue given is "it is not a yes or no question", which pretty much destroys all the answers we came up with so far. I'm not sure if we can assume that the person can't lie (i.e. "are you a gorilla?", someone who is lieing could answer yes) but I'd like to assume you can't. However if anyone has any guesses that aren't yes or no questions that could still be answered yes while lieing I'd still like to know. We already came up with Are you unable to answer "yes"?, "are you dead?", "are you asleep?", "do you not have a mother?", and "do you not have a father?"

But those are all yes or no questions (for the most part). Any ideas?

This is a riddle with an infinite number of correct answers. How are you supposed to know which ones the author had in mind? I suppose they ought to be something witty and funny....

Hail Artega,

in response to #4, I'd say "dreams"...

and #6 sounds like "e" to me...

Give me a a little time to consider the other ones (preferrably next morning, when I will be sober *g*).

Take care,

Never answer yes to?

Did Eve have a belly button?

No. They were never born but created.
All alone, or in twos,
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall.
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands.

And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall.

Come on now - that is a huge exaggeration! There are only 16900 possible combinations of letters (assuming we are using english).

"That man's father is"...me. He is my son.

Quote:- The maker doesn't want it, the buyer doesn't use it, and the user does not see it.  What is it?

The maker wants something, the buyer uses something, the user sees something, therefore the answer is...nothing.

Good Question

Quote:I never was, am always to be, no one ever saw me, nor will ever see.  What am I?

The future.

Quote:What is the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space, the beginning of every end, and the end of every place?

I don't knowe.

Couldn't figure out the other two.

Edit: Ok, got a couple wrong, fun anyway :).

Isn't not asking a yes or no question going to guarantee you can't answer yes to it?

Q. What time is it?

A. Yes

It doesn't quite make sense.

How about "what is your favorite color?"

There's actually a lot it could be if it has to make sense.

There's two of them in that question, and a whole lot overall.

Hmmm, you are adding some sort of restriction here, as there really are infinite combinations of letters using proper English. I'm almost certain I could come up with more than 16900 correct answers to this riddle. But I really don't feel like counting them all to find out!

Hi,

"what two questions can a person never answer yes to?". The clue given is "it is not a yes or no question"

If it is not a "yes or no" question, then one can never answer "yes" and make sense. If it is not necessary to make sense, then any answer is possible ("mu" anyone?).

So, any question along the lines of "What day of the week is it?" or "What's your name?" would fit the bill.

I'm not sure if we can assume that the person can't lie

If the person can lie, then the person can answer "yes" to any question, especially if "yes" is a nonsense answer.

I don't think you've got a riddle here. But as a spur for discussion it seems better than "What's green, hangs on a wall and whistles?" ;)

This is what I was looking at:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"What is a three-letter word that does not begin with the letter Y."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a riddle with an infinite number of correct answers. How are you supposed to know which ones the author had in mind? I suppose they ought to be something witty and funny....

aye!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I was reading "What is a three-letter word...." as a riddle rather than an answer to the first. Thus the restriction of three letters minus y for the first which equals 16900 combinations, most being nonsense.

I didn't scroll any further down than the questions, so I'll see if I can answer these from memory:

1) My son.

2) Coffin.

3) Wrong.

4)Don't remember.

5) Tomorrow.

6) The letter E.

7) Forgot.

Hi,

For 4, I think stars. Shadows are most pronounced when there is the most light.

Five can be any word for "future", including future, next week, etc.

Seven is just plain wrong. Not the answer, the question. Snopes does its usual great job of torpedoing it http://www.snopes.com/language/puzzlers/gry.asp ;)
