Alternative to GMail?
#1
In case you haven't heard yet, Google is in the process of rolling out it's own webmail service with a 1 GB storage limit.

https://gmail.google.com/
It's currently in beta right now, so you can't sign up.

I've been pretty excited about it ever since I first heard about it. Coming from Google, I know it's going to be a quality service. I'm definitely going to sign up when I get the chance.

Other services are starting to step forward, in an attempt to cash in on some of GMail's hype.

http://www.aventuremail.com/
This one looks very interesting, and I've signed up an account there. It offers a mind-blowing 2 GB storage limit and no attachment size limits.

http://www.spymac.com/index.php
1 GB webmail storage, plus "350 MB combined storage, personal blog, forum, gallery, auctions and more". Although it's meant for Mac enthusiasts, anyone can sign up. I've signed up there as well.

In the end, Gmail will probably prevail. But until then, it's nice to know that there is a little competition :)

How can anyone use even 500MB of storage for email!? What are people sending, full-length, DVD-quality pr0n movies or something similarly bloated?

I'll probably switch to GMail when it becomes available because I'm tired of the un-blockable Member Service Announcements Hotmail continually fills my inbox with.

I guess some people live off of their email; I haven't checked mine in three weeks.

Yeah, probably.

Actually, I would find this very useful. My family is fairly scattered and I don't get to see them much, but we love to exchange pictures. It's not uncommon for me to send/receive upwards of 10 MB of photos per day via email.

Saving each photo is easy enough, but a huge storage limit for webmail makes saving my photos that much easier. Plus, it's nice to know that if things go awry on my end there is a backup archive. I can even see myself setting up a second webmail account and CCing every email I send, just in case.

I got fed up with Hotmail years ago. I switched to softhome.net, but I'm equally fed up with them.

I check mine every few hours or so when I'm not working or sleeping. Like I said, it's a great way for me to keep in touch with my family. I don't have to worry about long distance phone charges, plus I get to send pictures and even short videos.

Gah! Just when I thought I could finally drop yahoo mail....

Tried signing up for aventuremail, but they had already reached their 10,000/week signup quota :(

Ah well, I'll just have to try again

Look what you did now DeeBye, you broke an email system! I tried setting up an account too and also hit the 10,000 signup wall. If anyone gets in, will you please post such as soon as you do so I can run over and try to get in before the bouncer slams the door again? Thanks.

I'm tempted; I really am, Deebye. I generally dislike hotmail due to the incessant heckling from the hotmail staff, the small stash-limit and the incredibly small limit to outgoing e-mails (1MB!).

However due to
* E-mail-conservatism
* the fact that I'd have to give away my new e-mail to a whole bunch of people
* the fact that I never get spam; ever (ever!) (except from the hotmail staff, which I can't block)

I'm reluctant to change e-mail-provider. I've had eirik_jakobsen@hotmail.com for as long as I've had Internet, and being slightly conservative, I don't want to let it go; just as I am uneasy about removing the [wcip]-tag from my nickname, even though the Counterstrike-clan has been dead in the water for years. I'm not a big fan of change, and if I can, I'll do everything I can to maintain the status quo, even if that means limiting my e-mails to 1 megabyte and having to delete a few mails a year from the hotmail-staff.

Oh, please tell me how you manage this. Please, please, please. I can't stand all the 'natural enhancement' spam I get, or all the stuff I can't even mention here.

Perhaps the secret is in having just 1 e-mail for a long period of time. During the first couple of years, you're subjected to the same amount of spam as a normal person, but you block every mail instead of just deleting it. That way, in the end, the world runs out of spam-e-mail-addresses to send you crap, as you've blocked them all.

Seems unlikely given the innumerable spam-agencies out there, but I have no other explanation for it.

Also, I surf with Opera, which I think might be a bit more secure than Internet Explorer. I visit the occasional naughty site every now and then; even this morning I had a hankering for a little Charisma Carpenter in her new Playboy photo shoot. I never get enlargement-ads, perhaps because *it* doesn't need enlargement (:P), but most probably because the advertisers know there's no hope for me and little me, even with all kinds of drugs, medical procedures and instruments. ;)

More like a few emails a week from those damnable Hotmail staff members.

I, too, never get spam. Never have, either. I've never seen any of the fabled "natural enhancement" emails, nor any of the virus-transmitting emails. I must be lucky, huh?

Or you're in no one's address book ;)

Most of my spam found my e-mail address because of other closely named people at my university getting caught ... damn spam mailers went down the alphabet and found me.

Ironically it's my comcast account, posted publically in many areas, that only gets a few spam mails a week.

I avoid Spam the easy way: make two email accounts. I have one on Hotmail and another on Eudoramail.

When I have to give out my email address online, I simply give out the one at Hotmail. If I'm giving it to a friend, then I give out Eudoramail.

Tada!

One piece of spam in two years time.

I just got in (lochnar@aventuremail.com) so if anyone is interested in trying it, the door might be open again. Good luck.

I've recently come upon the realisation that there is a distinct lack of albino porn on the internet. Go ahead, I double dog dare you to find albino porn.
