Fallout 2 Hates Me
#1
I decided to reinstall FO2 on a lark, since I never actually finished the game (lol pornstar lol), but I keep getting this:

The first loading screen appears normally, but then all the colors hift into this funky psychedelic mix of pink and purple. Even once I'm into the game (or character creation) sections of the GUI (buttons expecially) and any moving sprites (like my character and giant ants) are all weirdly pixellated with white/pink auras and junk.

It doesn't seem to be anything with directx settings, I've tried turning both direst3d and my 3d audio off and I still get the same issue.

Help. :(

hehe I've beat agent frank (end boss) several times, but I've never 'completed' the game. I always, always, learn something new each game. Never got all 10 cat's paws mags either.

Hmm. Any display properties forcing millions of colors? Personally, I'd try a complete uninstall/reinstall. Preferably in a different (clean) directory.

Eef, had it been a gameplay/bug related problem I'd be on this faster than a fat man on a doughnut.

The biggest problem you're going to face is... Interplay's dead. Literally, the company is dead. They've been leaking cash for months, sold off the family silverware (Basically, their D&D game rights) to Atari and Vivendi. HR suggested to the employees that they should take voluntary redundancy a while back, and offices closed last week. The Interplay site was dead (Last time I checked), BIS's site went dead a long time ago, and so did the forums (Hrmph, I was a regular on the FO boards). So good luck looking for support there.

That said, try the support site for Sold Out software. SO is a budget label in the UK, and they currently sell Fallout and Fallout 2, and they tend have support FAQs for their products, though any patches and the like would be for the UK version.

Every time I've seen stuff like that while trying to run games, it's always been due to video card driver issues. Since I assume you've already updated your drivers, I don't know what else to suggest.

Boy, this reply was certainly useless.

I believe this can be fixed by going to Start->Programs->City Of Heroes. Yes.

Sorry! :(

I'll make sure to get on tonight. Had some crap in general going on the last couple days, and couldn't use the phoneline as much as I would have liked.

Anyway, got this thing fixed, though I have no idea what I did right.

Recently, they released the Fallout Collection, (Basically FO:Radioactive repackaged) which contains the Win versions of FO, FO2, and Fallout: Tactics as well as the Radioactive bonus CD (Patches and manuals for all three games, as well as the full version of the FO:T bonus mission Springfield, and markers and rules for the FO:T P&P game.).

I bought it for two reasons, mainly:

1) FO:T by itself is rarer than rocking horse crap in the UK.
2) Interplay CDs have a habit of dying on me for no good reason. By that, I mean the CD is perfectly fine physically, but they refuse to read in any drive in any computer I use. So far, I can list BG2 CD 3 and 4 and my Icewind Dale - Heart of Winter CD. I'm currently waiting on one of my BG discs to die in the same way. It's inevitable.

Anyway, odds are that you should be able to find a new copy of FOC on Amazon. Get crackin'.

And more pertinant to WL's problem - I'd check the Advanced Settings in the Display control panel. Some cards can allow you to set different graphics settings for individual EXEs. Just tweak the hell out of it and see if it works.

*Shrugs* That's your opinion. I got my enjoyment out of it at least.

I think the reason why most people are disappointed with FO:T is because they went in expecting it to be FO3 when it in fact had no such self-delusions from the off. It was a tactical game, using FO's SPECIAL character system, set at an undocumented point of the FO universe.

And, damn it all to hell, while it didn't quite live up to the expectations of the Fallout universe, but it's a freakin' god compared to Interplay's Folly (AKA FO:BoS)

Lessee... Um, the full game title is Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout has always been abbreviated to FO, and the Brotherhood has been abbreviated in the games to BoS.

So

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel = FO:BoS

And on a less serious note, you're wrong anyhow. All the FO wags on NMA that have despised the game from the off has been labelling it FO:PoS ;)

That was something that I used to run into from time to time. It was either a case of my video memory running low, or (I'm just about to swear that this is one of the cure alls for video issues) I ALT-TAB out and come back. However, sometimes when the game was running fine with the video, and I would alt-tab, I would get the psychadelica video. It would eventually come back to normal though.

Small warning: There are spoilers to those unitiated in Fallout 2 grimoire.

I've been playing FO2 recently, and decided to have the "max" party again of 7 (i.e. 5 NPC member then marrying Miria instead of copping out to a doctor's excuse).

Myron truly has some of the funniest lines. "You may have 2 years to kiss my lily white ass." He even does better than expected in combat. He used to run away all the time, but now that he's armed with a YK32 Pulse Pistol and Bridgekeeper's robes, he's doing mucho damage. 30 odd per shot, sometimes two shots a round.

Skynet cybernetic robot is definitely disappointing with his sniper rifle. Grampa bones and the lost tribal Sulik died in battle, and he will not be missed. Miria is in there with her H&K G11E shooting it out muahahaha.

Other obvious combat choices: Worf/Michael Dorn... ahem. Marcus the supermutant sheriff, Cassidy the bartender with a fragile heart, and Vic "Hi boss" the trader repairman touting turbo plasma rifle (thanks algernon!), plasma pistol, and M72 Gauss Rifle respectively.

I've done few of the sidequests, and I plan on assasinating key players I just don't like now. Say hello to planted explosives!

I believe he meant by losing an 'o' you'd get FO:BS, similar to FO:PoS.

Aha, FO discussion.

Miria and Davin suck, big time. That's their whole purpose, that's why they were included. Not to be another NPC, but to be a burden. I once "recruited" Miria and, so help me, I put a bullet in her fragile skull the first chance I got.

Skynet (Assuming you're using the 'best' brain) is not a sniper, or at least he isn't supposed to be. Stick a Pancor Jackhammer or Gauss Rifle, and you've got a highly efficient killer in your party. Personally, I wouldn't use any of my NPCs for sniping, but Cassidy comes off better.

Sulik is a fabulous party member, seriously. I wouldn't bother with melee/unarmed, but if you do either give him a Super Sledgehammer or Mega Power Fist. Gun-toting Sulik comes in two varieties: Safe (With the .223 Pistol) or decidedly unsafe (H&K P90c or H&K G11E). Again, personally, until I have enough caseless ammo to make Sulik viable with the G11E I hand him the first P90c and all the 10mm ammo I don't need. 10mm JHP Is the most common ammo type in the game, so you've got plenty to go around.

Here's my dream party, be noted that it's possible to attain/barter/steal all the weapons needed.

Yourself: Small/Big Guns specialist, using Gauss Rifle and whatever burst weapon you prefer.
Marcus: Pulse Rifle, or if you like corpses to loot; Turbo Plasma Rifle. Also does well with Mega Power Fist.
Cassidy: Gauss Rifle
Sulik: H&K G11E
Skynet: Gauss Rifle
Vic: Gauss Pistol/Rifle

A note about Vic - He has six character levels, and for the first few his primary skill is Repair. As he levels up, he becomes proficient with Small Guns which makes him deadly with the Gauss weapons.

Now, you're probably saying "hey Goober, four characters using Gauss weapons? 2mm EC is the rarest ammo type in the game!" Well, you'd be wrong. 9mm is the rarest ammo type in the game (And one of the most useless), and you can barter crates of 2mm EC from Buster in NCR and the stores in San Francisco. You can also pick up a handful in the Military Base. The Enclave is also flush with that ammo type - Loot every locker in the barracks and the Maze o' Doom™ and you'll have enough ammo to put a sizable dent in the planet.

And... Really, how much ammo does your party use really? Unless you're sloppy with firing odds are what you'll find will put you well beyond the endgame. Unless you're using your party for combat, you'll rack up a sizable amount of kills yourself, with your party simply falling back into mopping-up duty. I gave Vic, Cass, and Skynet a hundred and fifty EC rounds each before heading into the Enclave for a full wipe and they had over half of it remaining by the time Horrigan bought the farm.

Finally, sorry for the shameless plug, point your browsers to http://seraph.samods.org and check out Seraph's patch for the game. Seraph's a good little worker and has managed to single-handedly produce a fan patch that fixes more stuff than any other (including those by groups of fixers). Especially for Cassidy fans, with this patch if you get the (Previously useless) Heart Pills from NCR and put them in Cassidy's inventory, he'll no longer suffer any fatal side-effects of the harder drugs. Cass hopped up on Psycho is a sight to behold.

I actually was running that patch in my last game (Small Arms/Lockpick/Speech Female Pr0nstar, heh). I only got to Modoc, so I didn't get to see many of the fixes, but it seemed like a very stable patch.

Quote:Miria and Davin suck, big time. That's their whole purpose, that's why they were included. Not to be another NPC, but to be a burden.

And that's exactly why I voluntarily recruited Miria. Actually, she can get you 500 credits for being a girl in good shape (and wide hips) at Vault City. Or divorce her at New Reno. I haven't had to reload for her until Navarro's land mines... I kinda neglected to watch over her. Oops. Its fun watching Myron make comments about Miria though. Plus, she likes knives. She actually does good shooting with H&K G11E. Sure she's got low hp. She needs decent power armor--but that's easy enough to 'loot'. Plus her custom NPC controls can be fine tuned to anything. Sure, she isn't you, but she's can be just as good as the rest---or better, considering the combat option to stay put when told instead of running headlong into danger.

Miria isn't a serious NPC, but she's better than expected. Myron too. He used to run away at the sight of battle with his needler, but who'd fight with a needer? Give both of them serious weapons and firepower, and they'll fight for you seriously.

Quote:Skynet (Assuming you're using the 'best' brain) is not a sniper

Ha! I once put Miria's and Myron's brain into skynet :) Too bad it doesn't make a whit of difference. Forgot he could use the Gauss though... Too bad. This game if NPC's die (with exception of the handicapping Miria) I let them die. Brain-bot's splattered all over Navarro's ground level surfaces right now. Maybe next time. He only has a Mark II metal armor equvialent though.

2mm EC ammo is plentiful :D I just don't like Sulik. He charges in and tends to get himself killed rather than staying put. Actually, I think it was lemmingofglory that said having NPCs was more of a burden than going solo. Sulik's one of them that's more likely to burst fire the others in the back. Personal preference. Sulik used to be one of my favorites, now he isn't. Good hp, good ap, and ability to use Power armor. Just sucky a SMG and ranged to-hit.... and constantly used melee when possible.

Oh yes, new thing I learned this round of FO2 playing (besides Myron/NPC quotes), you can convince the date-able Doctor's assistant in Vault City to get out and about instead of being completely dull, whinyl and boring. One more thing... there was a second way to talk out of marrying Miria that wasn't a physical exam excuse. Forgot what it was though. Anyone remember?

Did you buffout to Pr0n-star? or actually had the stats to do it 'naturally' ;) Drugged out star or not Locke? B) hehe. So are you having the star hitched up with Miria (and get the cattle farmer's fun reaction) or not WL?
