OK, a new suggestion
#1
Hi,

Would it be possible to limit a new member to some small number of posts for the first few days after s/he joins? Something like one post an hour for the first week or so?

Perhaps it could be done by using the rank system that, I think, is built into the software. I'm proceeding from a strong position of ignorance, but: a new member comes in and is assigned a "rank" of something non-judgmental, like "Lounger". The universal defaults are set up so that a "Lounger" can only post once an hour. A scrip runs once a night that promotes any "Lounger" that's been around for a week or more to a "Lurker" which gives full posting privilege.

While it will not keep flotsam from the sea of sewage from washing up onto the island of the LL, perhaps it can minimize the stink it causes when it does :)

Oh, and I hope the mods wear rubber gloves and full face masks when they clean up after some of our "visitors" ;)

I just sent in a bunch of reports. I don't think the number of posts is a problem so much as the fact that they waste space and I can't tell whether there are real new posts in threads that get marked with the squares. Also, some of the stuff with the bodily functions just shouldn't be said.

Edit: it's like in matrix revolutions with smith taking over everything, except I think this is actually serious.

I was just about to make a post, but I should have known another righteous defender of The Lounge wouldn't hesitate to step forward in its honor :)

I haven't checked the Lounge-area recently (read: the last 5 minutes), but there is havoc afoot in Atma's Tavern. Some jerk pushed himself passed Cain and is running around spouting nonsense to the regular boozehounds :) Poor Atma. First she looses her family to Radamant, and now this? Will no one stop this vile creature in destroying our favourite hang-out in the sandy city?

I think Pete's suggestion is a good idea. Granted, it will be annoying for the first person during that first week to limit one's activity, but if the poster is LurkerLounge-material, I know he'd (or she'd) endure. In addition to limiting the tripe some people tend to regurgitate unto the board, I think it might send a message out that this board is[ different - that we have standards, and expect you to adopt them.

edit: I just checked The Lounge.

Make that "  " What is *wrong* with "people"? As for the inverted commas; the level of stupidity I've witnessed over the Internet over the last couple of years, I'm quite certain that not all users of the Internet are necessarily human. I just can't imagine a real person behaving like this. (And I don't want to try either!)

Hi,

I'm quite certain that not all users of the Internet are necessarily human. I just can't imagine a real person behaving like this.

And that is the "liberal fallacy". When you admit to yourself that these *really* are people, and not only that, but that they represent a large part of the population ("half the human race is below average, and average ain't all that hot") then you've taken the first step to supporting a meritocracy. It hurts, at first, to admit that you are a member of a species that no other species would want to change to. But it is liberating in the long run.

Hurts? I think it's disgusting.

That post actually made me cringe.

I have to say though, every once in a while it's nice to be reminded how lucky we are. On this forum, this kind of behaviour is the exception, and not the norm as it is "everywhere" else. I have yet to study every corner of the web, but from what I've seen, I haven't seen anything come close to what we enjoy here at The Lounge. Perhaps there is another "Lurkerlounge" out there somewhere, with the same caliber of people, the same rules and the same standards, we just haven't found it yet. I doubt it, but if this is all there is to mankind, then a hell of a lot more than half is below average.

There are a few all right ones, none of the few sites I've looked at hits what this new guy's done. You could alwasys check out amazon basin and make the forums more merged.

What do you know, two really low down people in one evening. If the picture person is the same as the dumb post person, we woudn't be surprised.

I say Bolty reports them to their ISP and demand they have their Internet connection removed followed by filing criminal charges.

You know, of all the fora I've frequented in the past 8 years, public and private, moderated and unmoderated, this is by far the worst spam outbreak I've ever seen. I'd like to think it will be another 8 years before the next one. On the other hand, perhaps we shouldn't push our luck.

In that case, I guess if another one of these happens soon after, Pete's suggestion does have a point, since people can put several strategy questions in one post.

Good, it's all cleared up. Big thanks for the moderators, a.k.a. Griselda.

Aye, a big thank you to all the mods for all the hard work they do. This forum is of course "self-moderating" for the most part; incidents like this one prove that no matter how high we maintain our standards, there's always work for the clean-up crew.

And so, the endless cycle continues -- we consider a new way of stopping such a flood of garbage (or at least slow it to a trickle), decide it's too constrictive to keep the forums fresh, ban the offender and go on with our lives. Oh wait, we're not that far along yet.

After doing my best to support a waiting limit on new user's being allowed to post, I've arrived at a new decision -- whatever form of control the mods decide on is fine by me. Why?

1) The overall quality of this forum is, simply put, amazing. The occasional dose of real internet life cannot, will not, does not change this. In other words, stiffling out a few more of these bozos before they get started will be akin to swatting a few more mosquitoes -- helpful, yes; satisfying, of course; but overall a relatively minor victory and improvement.

2) Regardless of how tight we make the restrictions, such incidents will happen occasionally. Let's say we put a 1 week wait on new users ability to post; then we further limit them to one post a day for the next week; then we slowly increase this individual flood control over time -- if the moron really wants to spam such posts, all he has to do is sign up, come back in a few weeks, and do the same damage. Granted, those who perform such acts rarely display the patience or planning to perform such a feat. However, in the end, we can never fully stop such occurences.

3) In the end, the mods are the ones having to clean up the mess. How much of an annoyance is it to edit X number of posts and ban a few users? Frankly, I have no idea :P . If gris, bolty and all the others find the current system works best for them, then I'm fine with that.

The idea of more individual flood control is not a bad one, however, at this point I've simply decided to leave it all in the hands of the ones in charge. And try to remember to thank them every once in a while. Thanks :).

Hi,

Let me echo the thanks you give to the mods. They do a thankless (usually) task and do it well.

As to the rest of your post: well and excellently said. When I see someone disrespect something I hold in high esteem, it is hard to tell myself, "Wait. It is but minor damage and will soon be put right." But you put it very well. You've restored the balance. And so, to you, too, "thank you".

If I may object , I don't see any charges against the spammer or the one who sent his favorite pictures;if these pictures were pictures of child porn, the poster could be sued, but they were adult nude pictures, and adult porn can't be sued (at least by US laws);as to the spammer,he did spam so little that it can't be a crime to sue him;I am not an expert for US laws,I tell from the little I know about US laws,I could be wrong though..
As for reporting them to their ISP,these procedures can only apply to serious crimes ( again,I tell from what I have read),and not for 2 pictures or 10-20 spams...the investigation can cost a lot of money if the FBI is involved
Besides, there are progs which encrypt IPs and websites which allow you to be well hidden;I don't mean that the posters did hide, but it might not be impossible

Pete,

I'll take a look at this when the forum software gets upgraded to 2.0; currently, InvisionBoard 1.1 doesn't allow you to do this. Once again, Griselda was on the ball and quickly fixed up things. I'll have to give her a raise... :)

We have a number of "fans" of the site, if you know what I mean, who would consider this a fun activity. They had their jollies.
