Sideways.
No special effects.
Characters, a few well worked, a few not so. Story with enough exaggeration to be a story, and enough hooks into real life to make connections. Also, any number of things deliberately poked fun at, to include the entire mania that is "wine tasting" and oeniophilia. (Those folks who taste some expensive wine and quip "full bodied, good nose, with a hint of oak, but I am sure you'll be amused by it's presumption" and not be pulling your leg.)
And more than a couple of laughs. The answer to Bill and Ted's excellent adventure, aimed at folks over the age of 30.
Check it out, or wait until it comes out on video. I enjoyed the theatre experience this time, as it allowed me full immersion into the story, rather than the bloody phone going off.
In the rental arena, I was pleasantly surprised by "Spiderman 2." My son insisted I see it, he wanted to see it again in any case, and I am glad we rented it the other day. Higher quality than the first, which met the good enough standard with a few personal gripes, though I won't want a second look at it.
Wonder if they'll ever make a Calvin and Hobbes movie. I imagine that if they did, it would be incredibly hard to translate Watersons' spirit from strip to celluloid.
Maybe it should not be attempted. Garfield was such a bad idea for a film . . .

I liked Spiderman 2 as well. The first one was pretty good, and the sequel was, in my opinion, even a bit better.
Since we're on the movie thing, I might as well throw a bone towards National Treasure. I just watched it tonight with my wife and we both enjoyed it.

Are you kidding me? Waterson gets upset when a compilation is put out. He's never allowed any merchandise of any kind (I want a Hobbes stuffed tiger!), and is adamantly opposed to anything that could be remotely construed as commercial.
He feels he doesn't want to cheapen Calvin and Hobbes in any way. I feel he's going too far and not allowing even true fans a small pleasure.

Shark Tale
It is another entry in the "Shrek wannabe" category. It is reasonably witty although the plot is weak, which did not deter an eleven year old and an eight year old from loving it. As the long-suffering adult who has now seen it four+ times, I can attest that the redeeming feature is the voices. We have Will Smith, Rene Zellweger, Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorcese, Angelina Jolie and Jack Black, with my personal favourites being the Rasta jellyfish played by Doug E. Doug and Ziggy Marley. Rasta hats and dreads just worked perfectly with the look of a jellyfish. :lol:

Well, when you start with a cr*ppy source, you can't expect gold out of it. ;) Garfield lost any semblence of humor around 20 years ago.
I really liked Spiderman 2, though. Even more so than the first one.

I read an interesting article that claimed Jim Davis had no intention of making Garfield funny.
I used to think that Garfield had "gone downhill" as well. Then I went back and read some of the old strips that I used to love, and realized that I had simply grown up.

And as a public service announcement anytime there is a movie that makes locks "cool" you do not make locks with the following: Peanut butter, honey, toothpaste, superglue, or toxic chemical abominations called "dread perms." Dreadlocks are not dirty, nor smelly, nor disease ridden or bearers of contagion and filth. Any person of any race can grow dreadlocks, even the finest baby hair can in fact lock up quite nicely. All human cultures, races, and many religions have rich dreadlock history, it's not just a "black thing" or just a "Rastafarian thing." Dreadlocks are not caused by having lice, and many times, with a properly cared for head, it is almost impossible for a dreadhead to get lice. It's the tea tree oil. Bugs hate it. Not washing your hair is no way to get locks. Dreadlocks must be washed or very very very bad things will happen. Clean smooth hair locks... Dirty greasy oily hair does not lock, it clumps up and mattes with cloths of filth. That's not locks.

Don't count on the tea tree oil thing. Around here, everyone wears it to avoid lice, so the lice have learned to tolerate it. I've sent kids home from school with lice who were also covered in tea tree oil.
It may have been effective at one point, but at least in Oregon, it's not anymore.

Dreads are not an excuse to avoid bathing. Dirty hair cannot be called dreads, knappy is about as kind I would get for that.

My wife went to see Sideways and loved it.
National Treasure is a good popcorn movie.
The Spiderman films were fun but I got tired of Peter Parker's incessant whining.
I don't recommend the latest rendition of Phantom of the Opera.

Actually, knappy really isn't the right word here. ALL human hair is knappy. As in, capable of locking up. Most folks don't realize it because of all the toxic chemicals and crap they put in their hair. SLS in particular. Residues. Poisons. Yuck. Ew even. If you only knew what you were putting into your hair.
I am very defensive about this issue actually. I have vibrant clean sweet smelling locks. Healthy locks. And all the damn time I am subject to the stereotypes of the ignorant and small minded, and it doesn't help matters none that so many people are ignorant to what really makes locks, and do moronic things that only further the stereotypes.
And every time there is some pop culture moment involving dreadlocks, like say, Sharktales, there is a fresh batch of ignorance that blossoms. I am really quite sensitive to the issue.

1. You now have to people at least who would encourage you to see it yourself, if you can get the chance.
2. Took the kids to it, great family movie, good adventure, sort of an "Indiana Jones" sort of romp.
3. Bingo. The whining really detracts. I did like the "hmmm, I am losing my spidey powers, lets jump off the roof anyway." Ouch.
4. Double bingo. A few good voices, Minnie Driver did well IMO with her "not quite on her game Diva" but something about 19th century gothic makes my skin crawl. I paid for it, and I paid for it, if ya know what I mean. :unsure:

Ocean's twelve was allright if it's still out. Mey depend on who's watching it, I like it.
Return of the King special edition is great if you like those movies. Best movie I've seen this year. I think it should win some Oscars, above what the reguar movie got, which I didn't like as much for some reason. ( :P on the oscars)
Manchurian candidate and Bourne supremecy from the summer were O.k., they should work fine if you like those types of movies and want anythign to watch.
Touching the void from earlier this year also pretty cool. See this if you like those types.
