Switching weapons to bare hands?

I need to know how come a paladin at lvl 76 can kill Hell ancients so easily?He joined my game and helped me.that was very kind of him but when i saw that he was switching from shield and weapon to no weapons at all and i could hear he was using smith but his character's hand wasnt holding anything...i was amazed..Could someone kindly enlighten me on that?

The most likely explanation is that he didn't have enough natural stat investment to meet the minimum requirements of his weapon/shield, and instead did it through equipment tiering / charms.

This will often result in the character appearing bare-handed to people on other computeres, though the items function normally.
