Another patch for Starcraft
#1
Ahh, for those of you who might have forgotten about this old game about blowing up giant insects, psychic warriors and big battleships

Basically, in the next patch they will be incorporating features from a popularly used third-party program. This is interesting; Blizzard has generally not gone out of their way to stop non-cheating third party programs, but they never really condoned them either. Some features include being able to save the text in a replay and having replays automatically saved. There is also the possibility of an anti-hack that would be implemented.

In addition, a new ladder will be created. Once again, Blizzard has turned to a third party, Wgtour, to do this.

This coming soon, which in Blizzard time means "don't hold your breath"

There are a good many anti-hack measures already in the current version. Offhand, I know that Starcraft uses a version checking library that catches many in-memory modifications to the game (can be bypassed, but far from trivial), and accepts commands from the server to download and run arbitrary extra libraries for additional checking (part of the "Warden" project). I thought that it also had one other protection, but I can't find reference to it now, and don't have an updated Starcraft handy to check.

Well, the immediate things I see seem kind of underwhelming, but I wonder what's up with this league thing. LL League?:D

They removed the "Sex" box in your profile. Oh nos!

I'm sad.

I can't get StarCraft to run on my machine. Or, more specifically, when I run it the actual image on the screen is either the loading screen or a static of the menu screen. The game still runs, I can go through menu options using half-remembered keyboard shortcuts, but only the colour palette of the frozen image changes.

And yes, I've done all the regular tech support procedures that comes with the territory. Drivers, defrag, scandisk, etc.

More details? You installed the new patch right. The new patch seems to be problematic at this point, so hold on for a bit.

About the only other detail I can give is that this happened both with 1.14 and 1.15.

OS?

Try copying install.exe into your starcraft folder.
Also run it via shortcut to the executable, not with cd autoplay.

Also try their open technical support forums http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?Fo...ame=opensupport Much more useful than their email support.

Done. No change.

Always done.

I'll give that a shot later.

More details, I ran it just now, and FRAPSed the result. Oddly enough, while the screen still froze at the menu screen, the dumped video said the game was running as normal.

Okay, got it working now. I posted on the Open Tech Support forum, but after many wonderful suggestions it didn't work.

Then another guy posts with exactly the same problem, and then it was revealed that the problem was XFire.

Sounds good, and you visited the part of the battle.net forums that has brain cells.;)

Sadly, the new patch is a disaster involving a lot of crashing. If there is a hacker in the game, the replay becomes corrupted and the game crashes when the game autosaves. But I suppose it's easier to id the cheaters though.-_-Well, it could also be caused by lag too.

I mainly play this game for team games only [and mostly on money maps because I'm lazy, but I can play the regular maps too] -- too crappy to play solo.

Suukantsu on USwest for reference.;)

That seemed to be the case back when I used to play on a regular basis with the Star Alliance. 4v4 teams, we'd end up reaming a random team, and the last man standing crashes out, leaving a replay corrupted or even unsavable.

Man. I miss those days.
