I've been playing D2/D2X for over two years now, and never had this happen before. It may be an old well-known bug, but I've never seen mention of it, so here it is:
I was playing my Necro, who has a Spineripper. While shopping a Larzuk's for some kind of throwing thing for my weapon switch, I switched weapons to see how his short spears compared to the javs I had. When I switched, I heard the sound of one Skeleton and one Skeleton Mage each crumbling, as my level in each of those went down by one (Spineripper grants +1 Necro skills for those who don't know/care).
No biggee, but then I went up to Atma's, and couldn't click on her. I would walking all around her, and she'd even turn to face me, waiting for me to click on her, but I couldn't do it. I did a quick weapon switch and back again, and then I could click on her again. Weird.
Just thought I'd share.

sometimes the alt key gets stuck, and you cant click any npc's chars or monsters, just items. this may have happened to you, and you may have cleared it when you hit 'w'
just a thought.

Did atma's name appear when you tried to click on her? If not, it would be a good bet that Odd is right about the alt key.
I have had that problem before(it's real bad in the middle of a fight in HC, and you can't figure out what's going on).
If her name did appear, all I can guess at is some form of desync.

No, her name didn't show up, or the little menu of choices underneath. So it was possibly the Alt key thing. It just seemed weird that I'd gone to Larzuk just prior, did a weapon switch while the Trade window was open, and then after not being able to click on Atma, another weapon switch seemed to fix it.
I guess it will remain one of the great mysteries of life. Thanks for the responses.

I've had something like that happen to me in various circumstances. Usually doing something simple like opening and closing my inventory will fix it.

Atma or Anya? Not that it makes much of a difference, just that you'd have to take a Waypoint in order to reach Atma from Larzuk's. :P

Ha, you're right! It was neither of them. It was Malah. I get her and Atma mixed up. They're both, I don't know, wise old ladies that heal you as soon as you click on them.
Trivia: Malah's voice is done by the same woman who did Adria the Witch ("I sense a soul in search of answers") from Diablo I.

Orbert Hmm, I just tested -- Atma may be wise and all that, but she refused to heal me. I even had her armor on.

I have also had similar things hapen to me...I usually move far enough that I can't see that particular NPC and when I come back it's fixed. Perhaps it is my Alt key sticking (I spilled chicked soup on my keyboard a while back and sometime the key sticks so can see all the items on the ground even without holding the key.)

you have been, and there you will
