One of Blizzards many points of ignorance that screwed over Chargers in LoD was the lack of consideration over how mercs would behave to a Charge based character. What happens is the merc wants to follow - constantly - so both the ranged mercs will run around after the Charger instead of standing and shooting, often running into the enemy hoards. <_<
I've made limited used of a Cold Iron Wolf however, in odd occasions where I can leave him hold one point freezing something at close range while my charger ping pongs over his location, thus containing three monsters at a time. Like this . . .

He is dead weight versus cold immunes though.
The meleers unfortunately aren't much better. Whenever your character moves beyond a certain range from them, they'll want to uproot and follow, which is highly annoying.
Conclusion: Get a Cold Iron Wolf for specific tactics or get a Spearman for an extra aura and don't expect him to poke at much with is pointy stick. :(
