What is eth bug and other questions
#1
I apologize if this may be a "noob" question, but i don't have a lot of time. I have heard of the Eth bug - what is it? Can the 290 small charm be found? Why don't more people use rare jewels? Does cranium basher exist (<---- this seems like a sweet weapon)?

Thanks if any can help.

The Eth bug essentially gives a weapon ITD, even against bosses.

A 290 what small charm?

Rare jewels can't have some of the best affixes, such as the highest max damage, highest enhanced damage, highest resist all and only IAS affixes.

Cranium Bashers can drop from very high-level monsters. It's not common, though.

A 290 Poison Damage small charm can indeed drop.

I had one drop on the Cow level for me from a normal Cow. edit: a normal Hell Cow that is.

The Prefix on it is : Toxic 20.01 per second, Poison Duration 5 seconds
The Suffix on it is : Anthrax 8.39 Poison Damage per second, Poison Duration 6 seconds

20.01 + 8.39 = 28.40
5 + 6 = 11 seconds.

28.40 * 11 = 312.40 Total Poison Damage

There is a bug where the Display Screen caps the Poison Duration at 10 seconds so you don't get to see the real damage it does.

Because of this the game ends up (on the screen only!) with 28.40 * 10 = 284 Total Poison Damage

Don't ask me why the 284 gets displayed as 290.

If youre lucky Ruvanal or Hammerman will show up to fill in the details. It has someting to do with the fact that Poison is applied in 256th of 256 but that is higher math to me.

Rare jewels seem to suffer worse that other rare items. Or, maybe I'm unlucky. I've never found a rare jewel that has been very useful.

Rare jewels of +9 str +9 dex +10 life +20 mana are quite good to to stick in oculus for pvp sorcies. In fact, one such thing may well go for as much as a low ed Grandfather!

As the eth bug and poison charm has been explained, I'll tell you the problem with rare jewels is even the better ones are still not as good as magic, as magic have greater pre/sufixes.

The best rare jewels i have ever found have been a 30 ed jewel, with 30 light res (i think, long time since i soc that into a weap), with a couple of vit points. The second was a 14 ed 9 mf jewel with a few other minor stats. As you can see, compare this to jewels such as a 40/15 (yes, they can drop, but are rare, you are more likely to get a lower ed. I have found a 16 ed 15 ias), or a jewel with ed and min/max damage.
What is this life if, full of care
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

The max poison duration on a single item is capped at 255 frames (10.2 seconds). So the duration that gets saved for that charm would actually be 10.2 seconds and not the 11 seconds that both paffixes together imply nor the 10 seconds that is the rounded value show for display purposes.

with 28.40 * 10 = 284 Total Poison Damage

should be 28.40*10.2=289.68

This weekend I found a Doom Eye jewel with 1-100 lightning damage, +8 to dex, +8 to energy, and all resistances +10. This may be the best rare jewel I've found, but I have at least one other good one. Problem is with the good jewels I tend to collect them but not to socket them in anything -- since I know the chance exists I'll always find a better item and a better jewel.

Odd, never seen this fact mentioned before but I believe you.

Just so I understand this correct, 255 frames is the max that is done from a single item regardless of pre- and/or suffixes?

Is this done with floating point math then?

I vaguely recall you saying that the only floating point math done in the game is in the Magic Find department?

Ruvanal,

What about the following?

Pestilent small charm of Anthrax = 29.19 Poison Damage over 6 seconds with 8.39 Poison Damage over 6 seconds.

29.19 / 25 = 1.1676 per frame
8.39 / 25 = 0.3356 per frame

(1.1676 + 0.3356) * 255 equals 1.5032 * 255 = 383.316 total Poison Damage

or

(1.16 + 0.33) * 255 equals 1.49 * 255 = 379.95 total Poison Damage

Please your valued opinion on the above

This is based on the Tao of Poison and Ruvanal's work.

The pestilent small charm of anthrax is:
pestilent = 299 bit damage per frame over 150 frames
of anthrax = 86 bit damage per frame over 150 frames

total = 385 bit damage per frame over 300 frames
limited = 385 bit damage per frame over 255 frames

in HPs = 385/256*25*255 over 255/25 seconds
= 383 damage over 10.2 seconds (displayed as 10 seconds).

where 1 bit damage = 1/256 of 1 HP

Note that 299 / 256 =~ 1.1676
and that 86 / 256 =~ 0.3356

Again, I didn't do any of the work, I'm just rephrasing it.

RW,

Thank you very much for the very nice info.

I have to study it. (I am a bit mathematically challenged)
