The Ethereal Axe That Didn't Break

I was in the underground passage with my barb trucking as usual. when my axe i was using suddenly "broke" but i was still wearing it and getting the attack from it. I can't figure it out.
If it works ill include a screen shot here but if not you can go Here to see it.

When i posted this my axe was still working but after a few more kills it finally broke for good. My guess now is that it had less than 1 Durability left. Like .2 or something.

I had this happen to me earlier with a magical crystal sword. It turned red on the top right paper doll, but I was able to kill the creature I was beating on before it broke (on the last swing. Coencidence, it seems.)
