General Black Screen-ness

I really didn't want to post this here, but I can't figure out any other place to ask. Seeing that 1.10 has been released in Beta, I reinstalled D2:LOD to my computer. Unfortunately all I get when I start the game is a black screen, then my monitor goes into energy saving "sleep" mode, and I have to restart. I tried to post in the battle.net support forum, but you have to have a bnet account to post there, and I can't get into the game to make one. If I run a video test, a blue screen pops up and says my Geforce2 is in a infinite loop. I've tried everything, upgrading to 1.09D, installing new drivers, and I can't figure it out.

I use a GEForce2 as well on one of my machines, and what is worse is that it is OEM (Dell) and so I have to debate as to using the Dell supplied driver or the ones from nVidia directly. I frequently have trouble with Diablo releases, and Diablo will not run at all when some other softwares are running on that machine (like netmeeting running as a service in background).

For v1.09 I had to download and install the latest Bios release for my video card, then get the latest drivers (from nVidia) and finally install the latest DirectX drivers from Microsoft. If you fail the blizzard supplied video test, the software will not run.

Could it got to do with the refresh rate? I don't know, but I know many had a problem similar to this, and solved the problem by turnding down the refresh rate.

Try uninstalling the entire game(keeping the character files alive), and reinstalling it from scratch?

at the moment I have the same problem. It started after I formatted my whole harddisk and installed XP(pro) again. Now that my modem is working again (was also broken) I will start to see what I can do about it. First I will try to install the newest directx (I had an error message which said there was some direct3d problem). Later I also got a windows errror, I sent the error report and in the reply they said I had to install some new nvida driver or something. So I know it has something to do with the videocard or drivers. If I succeed I'll reply you again with an answer that you can really use.....(I am also using geforce2 by the way)

i too have the same problem, but it started after i upgraded from win98 to win 2000. mine wont work at all, I cant even here the sounds. so if some one figures out the answer i would be grateful. I havn't been able to on so i go to my friend and play there. maybe you guys should to that util the time being.

You probably do need to get the latest drivers. The ones that ship with the operating system install are usually inadequate. It sounds like you need updated W2K drivers for your graphics card, and sound card as well.

I had the exact same problem. Your graphics card is generating too high a frequency that your monitor can't handle, and the monitor "shuts down". It is to do with the refresh rate and the screen resolution: when I changed the screen resolution of my monitor to 640x480, the graphics card (set to Optimal Refresh Rate) would refresh the screen so many times per second that the monitor could not handle it.

Try setting your display adapter's refresh rate to either Adapter Default or 60 MHz. You'll get sucky flicker, but that's the price to pay, unless you get a more expensive/capable monitor.
