Strange Question

Alright, so my boys are 12 and 9. My wife and I had "the talk" with my boys last year sometime, but they seemed either uninterested, or not understanding, so we got a video called The Miracle of Life, however it was rather dated and didn't really explain anything about how to make babies, despite the title. So anyways, I thought my kids knew about, well about kids, but my daughters hamster became pregnant by my sons hamster a few weeks ago and gave birth to a liter of eleven pups. Now my son's hamster got loose again and tried to get together with my other son's hamster, but thankfully there was a cage between them. So anyways, my younger son says, "well Dad, they were trying to lick each other through the cage. Was that enough to get Brownie pregnant?" It was at this point that I realized he really didn't get it. So I typed in Sex Education in google and got a plethora of links, but nothing I'm really looking for. My son is more of a visual learner and has always had a difficult time in school because of this, but after a private tutor, we've worked around his learning curve, so what I'm looking for to teach him is more of a visual flip-page style diagram on the internet, but no porn please. Yes, it has to show the act, but in a tactful, scientific way. Does anyone know of such a site, or have any suggestions for how they successfully taught their kids about sex?

Once they hit 13, we're going to give them the "safe sex" speech, but until then, we have to get the first part right.

The words "he has to insert his penis into the woman's vagina and then put the sperm into her" are explicit. How explicit was your 'talk' ?

I am thinking a revisit with a straight anatomical chart should be sufficient to explain what you want without having to resort to videos.

There are many vendors of medical anatomy charts. Here is one:

Hmm. Well, I don't know how it's over there, but here kids are learned all the gritty details, including stuff like the pill and condoms, in the first year of high school, at the age of 11-13.

Since you prefer to do ' the talk' yourself (big plus to you for that!), here's some links I found.

A video explaining the anatomical stuff (pretty difficult terms, but what I learned at age 13).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVG1hA9aq7U

This may be a bit too hard, but it's part of what I learned in first year of Biology class:
http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopi...&np=289&id=1613
(We actually learned of every phase of the child's growth and how egg-cells and sperm cells work)

Here's a good one, picture by picture.
http://www.planetdan.net/pics/babies/index.htm
Funnily, I found the same book later, in english:
http://www.amazon.com/true-story-how-babie...e/dp/0516036408

This book comes recommended on the internet:
http://www.amazon.com/Where-Did-Come-Peter...e/dp/0818402539

Hope this helps.

No we gave them that talk, and I think my older son was embarresed so acted uninteresed, but understood. Like I said, my younger son needs something visual to comprehend what we're talking about, so I think that's what went wrong.

You are most likely correct about an anatomical chart. Perhaps the local library is my best resource for something like that? As for the video, I was talking about something more along the lines of Discovery Channel or TLC explaining the act.

The anatomical charts should be available online, but I think that the links that Crusader gave you are even better for right now. However, it wouldn't hurt to get one of those charts anyway, just to have for future follow ups. They are readily available at websites online.

Hi,

Quote:Alright, so my boys are 12 and 9.
I find it amusing that no one teaches the birds and the bees (not to mention the Muskrats) about 'the birds and the bees', and yet they seem to do fine. As far as I know, humans are the only species that 'need' sex instruction and the only one that has sex based neurosis, taboos, etc. That may say more about our attitudes and customs than it does about anything else.

The mechanics are simple enough, and wired into the brain deep enough, that people figure them out (more or less) when the opportunity presents itself. As with many things, the importance isn't so much in knowing how to do something as it is in knowing when to do it. That 'safe sex' talk you are planning for when your sons are thirteen really needs to be much more than that and probably more of a process than an event. Not only safe sex, but respectful sex, cherishing sex, need to be considered. The fact that you are actively concerned and attempting to do what you can tells me that you stand a great chance of doing it right. Good luck with it.

Way too soon for your boys now, but something you might want to consider for later (14, 15 or there abouts) is sexual education beyond the basics. At about that age (early teens) I obtained a copy of The Art of Sensual Seduction. In many ways it was a milestone. It does not seem to be in print (after all, it has been almost a half century since then) and I have no idea what a good modern replacement for it is.

You never stopped to think what exactly cause the dinosaurs to go extinct? Metors, ice age - come on! Plain and simple some parents followed your advice and got too cocky to teach their kids about the birds and the bees (I assume it was called the Archaeopteryxs and the Kalligrafmatidaes) and they stopped reproducing. Sex ed is fundamental to the continued existance of mankind.

More seriously, if you want to make sure you have the safe sex talk before they discover sex (I personally think it best to have this talk with them before a 14 year old gets pregnant) you will need to explain sex in some manner. Modern humans have some motivations to delay children which other species don't (which may also tie in to the taboos).

The tone seems ironic, but not clearly so. The lack of an emoticon adds to the uncertainty. I hope you are being sarcastic, for to assume the opposite pains me. And would lead me to, as usual, give offense.;)

I'm sure that, in the tens of thousands of years before homo sapiens developed language, the human race went extinct from lack of sex education. It was only after language (and advanced enough language to clinically express the sex act) was developed by this (extinct) race that it was able to make the only known comeback from extinction and progress to overpopulating the world. :whistling:(emoticon added for the interpretively challenged).

Never said you shouldn't. Just pointed out that, if you will, understanding the mechanic of the sex act is to an understanding of sexuality like knowing the alphabet is to appreciating literature. A trivial sine qua non.

If by 'modern' you mean after the first third of the twentieth century, and by 'humans' you mean urban residents of the industrial nations, then I agree. The more primitive the conditions, the more uncertain life is, the more the necessity of having children soon and often. Even in 'advanced' countries like England and the USA, in rural areas as late as the turn of the twentieth century, marriage at fourteen or fifteen was not uncommon. For women, even urban women, it was the norm.

I think this is what happened to the Neanderthals. Or, possibly they found homo sapiens sapians more attractive and thus their distinct race died out, although at times we get throw backs. :D

I assume you would argue that Archaeopteryxs are actually descended from dinosaurs and may not have been able to fly at all. I believe people are still debating this, but I´m not sure. Anyway, I wouldn´t take offense.

True enough, although there was a recent article in Nature in which they discussed the possibility of bringing wooly mammoths back by futzing with the genetic code of elephants. Here is a NYtimes article about it (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/scienc...oth&st=cse).

Let me get this straight. You are saying I can´t attach the basis of a thousand year old taboo on something that is a 50 year old phenomenon? Where do you get the nerve? (i.e. interesting point. I was wrong about the source of the taboo.)

Actually some of the more recent research I've seen suggests that this is exactly what happened to neanderthals, that they mated with and blended with our earlier ancestors. So neanderthal isn't extinct, it's just been genetically assimilated into homo sapien. Again it doesn't answer all the questions about what happened to Neanderthal but from what I've seen/read it seems to match all the data out there better.

Yes and maybe. But it does answer the age old chicken and egg dilemma.

Yep. As well as a few other extinct species where there's some DNA available and something close to use as a starting point. But you spoiled my joke. :(

Of course you can, people invent ancient traditions every day. And I had some extra nerve left over when they replaced my hips -- didn't need it in the titanium.;)

Sorry I came late...

See? That's the kind of misinformation that will get adventurous teens into trouble...

It doesn't matter who does the inserting. Your students might assume that if she does the inserting, they have nothing to worry about.

In fact, that particular type of insertion isn't even necessary. Two of my kids were born after a team of three women impregnated my wife. I was there, but no male body parts were used in that session.

Don't cry for me, though. Days earlier, I had found the visual materials provided in the collection room to be quite motivational and uplifting.

Of course I do, all kind decent people love you. And I am kind of decent.

But you're right, I do love you, not just to the moon, but there and back again . . but

sadly, you're a moderator -

so you're unattainable -

and that's just too painful.

So I must drown my sorrow, by cruising for librarians. And that's getting tougher, as the old grisly (!) Reference Librarians are literally (!) dying out, I often have to settle for some still-svelte Reshelving Volunteer. Sheesh. They aren't as knowledgeable but they sure know how to move their racks around.

(BTW I won't mention my recurring dream of being in an elementary school classroom, writing almost-explicit double entendres on the blackboard and yelling "moderate me! moderate me!", because I'm sure it isn't relevant.)

Hmm, I guess I should get back on topic. What was this thread about, again? Hrm, sex education for tykes.

My 9yrold has seen many many nature videos. While she has never mentioned human sex, she has occ'ly said something about animals "mating". So I'm pretty sure she knows the mechanics. What she'll need to know is why not to do it, and what you must absolutely do in any case to stay healthy and avoid various troubles.
