Actually no. If you had infinite storage space, no one would ever need to throw items away. We'd all end up as set and unique collectors, we'd have umpteen character specific rares and enough gems to build a house. All that must take up more storage than a few level 1 mules.
As it stands, we're faced with a logistical problem every time we level or an item drops: do we stop to bring in a mule or play on? If we're in NM or Hell, do we drop down into Normal or do we push through a high-level mule? Heck, if we play hardcore, we gamble everything in stash every time we leave town. All this adds an extra dimension to the game.
