Hi, I am rather new and have been called a toll, but i require advice.
I currently own a amd athlon xp 2700+.
I also own a thermaltake case called xaser III supertower with 7 fans. Ive wasted about 100$ on newer
heatsinks and fans, yet my temp stays at 170 something. Ive heard from many people that the "volcano" series is a
Good choice. But i dont want to waste more than i allready have.
Any thing at all will be helpful.
Thanks, LL

Do the fans work? You might have too many fans. If they are in some way they might be actually cutting down on circulation, by all blowing against eachother. What thermometer do you use?

What heatsink/fan do you have on your processor (be specific)? Unless it is super tiny and aluminum (or worse aluminum with a copper base) it should be doing better. My guess is that it is not seated on the CPU firmly. Check to insure that the heatsink is not tilted or only making contact with a only small portion of the chip. You might want to invest in some thermal paste and reseat it just to be sure. If that is not it, then you can use the thermal paste on your new heatsink.

tt makes some good CPU heat sinks and some cheap ones. 170F? That is too hot -- How are you measuring the temp?
I'd look for one like this; The key is that it is made from a solid piece of copper.

Being a troll means that your posts might incite a violent response. Like "You cannot beat xbox's graphics core speed, ps2 just is crap" :) Or, "only fools and child molesters live in Tampa." :D You might imply that, but it is better to be more diplomatic in how you phrase it.

You can actually sand down the bottom of your heatsink to where it reflects like a mirror. What this does is remove all the mountains and valleys on the heatsink allowing more surface area to contact the CPU. Arctic Silver thermal compund will help out too, but be sure to just put it on the core, you don't have to smear it over the entire CPU. Another thing that will help airflow is cutting off that fan grill in the back of your case. Take some cutters and remove that circle and be sure to sand those nasty sharp edges down. Make sure your fans are not just blowing against each other. Make there be an actual flow of air,. Have, say, the bottom ones blowing into the computer and the top and sides blowing out. Try getting wires out of the way as they could be constricting airflow also.

Well thanks, Kandhrathe here is my heatsink and fan combo, dp5-6I31D-01 and its coolermaster, and its not copper, pakman, i checked the cords, and yes they where in teh way of 3 fans, they are now ziptied out of teh way, i tell my tempature by hardcano, there is a wire that connects directly to the bottom of the processer, doesnt effect it (the cooling) at all. thanks for the help.
Funky
ps/edit: i Also noticed that the temp only went down 6 degrees, i knew it wouldnt help much.....
and toot! for newegg. :P

We tend to forgive easily here, if the poster makes serious attempts to redeem him/herself. I think you've made quite an effort. If you only put the "h" in front of the "e" in "the", we might just have a new solid Lounger on our hands ;)

If you are going to sand it you need to use wet dry (automotive)emory paper in grits ascending to 1000 or 2000 grit. You want to sand it against a very flat surface and not in a swirly pattern. Go in one direction and get rid of any concave or convex warping in the bottom of the heat sink. Once it is flat, polish it until it reflects like a mirror. Personally, I don't do it wet. I just clean out the metal dust about every 10th pass.
CPU Heat Sink Lapping Guide
The Coolermaster dp5-6I31D-01 is probably not adequate. You probably have a thoroughbred B core which runs a little hotter. Info on -- AMD - Athlon - Thoroughbred That chip does not overclock well, so be sure the voltage is 1.65v. If it is overclocked, and it is stable, except for the heat, then you definately want a better CPU cooler.
