I also love paladins, but if its Diablo II related, next time try Atma's Tavern or The Armory ;)

Also, in general lurkers like more specific questions . . . perhaps ask about preferences over one type of paladin compared to the next, enticing posters to provide pro's and con's to each side. Or debate on what weapons work best in what situations, etc. Vague posts are no good, so give us a meaty topic to dig into!

You're on the right track, but you just need to go a little bit further. Concision is a good friend! So is grammar and spelling, so be good to them. And us lurker's will be good to you! :)

Well, to make a paladin, you have to click on the guy wearing shining armor and wielding a sword. Then you give him a name.

And to get good items, you should kill monsters, especially boss monsters, to get better items. Then pick up the biggest sword you see to kill more monsters. ;)

Hey don't blame me, that's how I did it.  B)

Hi,

Get a room close to a casino in San Francisco. Wait around until you get a telegram. Wear black clothes. Keep a derringer under your buckle. Works if your RL name is Boone.

Am I the only one who remembers?

Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.
His fast gun for hire head's the calling wind. . . . . (Yeah, I know it is "heeds", but this was a cut 'n paste :) )
A soldier of fotune is the man called Paladin.

Paladin, Paladin Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin, Far, far from home.

He travels on to wherever he must;
A chess knight of silver is his badge of trust.
There are campfire legends that the plainsmen spin
Of the man with the gun,
of the man called Pa-l-l-l-l-a-din

More at this memory. :)

Do you have any idea just how expensive a full white harness is!? And then there's getting the sword, the horse, and hiring a guy to emblazon your shield with a herald...

Making a paladin is very hard to do. There's the training, and attaining their loyalty to you. Not to mention the legal fees that would arise when said knight gets collared for the unneccessary violence he may inflict in his knight-errantry upon the community.

And that's not even touching the years upon years of fanatical devotion to the deity of choice, either.

I'm a little young for the original show, but I was able to see them all while working the graveyard shift on a help desk back in '83. One of the local UHF stations would have all night marathons showing all the episodes of an old TV series in order. Those were the days. Before infomercials.

To be a paladin, you have to undergo several extensive lobotomies. I've seen the results of some failed operations, and let me tell you, they are NOT pretty.

That's where they got the high council in Travincal from. Mephisto goofed up a lobotomy.

But the botched operations serve well to delve deeper into the mysteries of what happens when things do go wrong...

...they may even name the botched procedure after you and apply it to the most violent of patients.

You guys are all really mean... Just have somebody move the thread and be serious.

At the moment there are 4 viable Paladin builds I see around.

The Hammerdin uses Blessed Hammer, and Concentrate+synergies to boost Hammer's damage. It is one of the most powerful character types in the game in my opinion. Here's your skill plan:

20 Blessed Hammer
20 Concentrate
20 Vigor
20 Blessed Aim

Hammerdins favor spell caster equipment, such as +skills, faster cast, and enhanced mana.

Zealot's are your staple fighter builds. They use 1 of 3 different auras in combination with Zeal to spread their damage over several different enemies. The standard Zealot uses Fanatasism, and has a very high attack/frame rate. The Shockadin uses 'Holy Shock' which adds a cool 4000 maximum damage to your attack. Multiply that by however many enemies you're hitting (is it 4 or 5 i forget) and thats quite a bit of damage.
My personal favorite kind of Zealot is the Frost Zealot. The holy Freeze aura is a joy to use; it slows down alll to half their original speed, and adds cold damage to your attack.

Shockadin Skills:

20 Holy Shock
20 Resist Lightning
20 Salvation
20 Zeal? Probably the last thing to max, if at all.

Zealot Skills:

20 Fanatacism
20 Zeal
20 Sacrifice(synergy)
20 Holy Shield

Frost Zealot:

20 Holy Freeze
20 Resist Cold
20

Crap g2g i'll edit it later and continue.

Edit: I'm continuing my post now

20 Zeal
20 Salvation

(actually i'm not quite sure if you would max zeal, they might be better spent in 'holy shield' for both teh Shockadin and Frost Zealot)

For all of these characters you want a good blocking shield, and a fast weapon.

Avengers...

I tried making one, but it was hard because of the poor crowd control skills. Avengers do massive damage to a single target though. Vengeance adds a percentage of elemental damage to your attack and is synergies with each 'resist (element)'. Pumping element x will add more damage to your attack. This pali uses 'conviction' to lower resistsances to their attacks. In hell, it is a very potent combination.

Since Vengeance's damage is based on your weapon damage, you want as much Melee damage as possible. Breath of the Dying runeword works quite nicely.

Skills...

20 Vengeance
20 Conviction
Alternate between resist cold, fire, and lightning.

Another build for the poorman...

1 Vengeance
20 Conviction
20 each resist

This does less damage per skill point, and you don't get the AR bonus of high level vengeance, but you do save a lot of mana.

Smiters

The funnest build in my opinion. When you use Smite, your Pali smacks the target with his shield. Each shield has a set amount of smite damage. As you level up smite, the skill increases your shields damage by a percentage, ending at 300% I believe. Holy Shield also adds to smite damage, so you don't need a godly shield, although it helps.

Smite knocks back your target and stuns them. This is great crowd control. When surrounded by a pack of monsters target each in turn and they will all be knocked back so you can focus on the next one attacking you. This build has three major problems though:

1. It's a hassle to kill a single monster in a wide open space. If you can get their back to a wall, you will keep chasing them until they die.

2. You can't stun some monsters, including act bosses, and a lot of superuniques.

3. Your damage will always be very low; expect to click a lot in order to kill a hell monster.

Skills...

20 Smite
20 Holy Shield
20 Defiance (synergy to holy shield)
20 Fanatisism (adds more enhanced damage, and increases your speed)

Just go for the highest damage shield you can find, and the fastest weapon you can find. Your smite speed is directly related to your weapon attack speed.

Mean? Pftt!

I take offense to that comment fine young sir!

If there's anything we learned from DeeBye's "Gmail giveaway" thread, its that the lukers have a hard time being mean. Look, it's pathetic how much of a bunch of "wussies" we are.

But even if we do have a soulstone of hate inside us (har har diablo 2 reference) I think we were rather nice to this young chap.

But due note: (I think it was [wcip]Angel who said it first, but I'm)

Sure we are kind of being annoying by all these non-answers. For some real ones:

Medic: not an attacking build, just a support/undead killing one. Holy bolt and meditation heal, holy bolt and fist of the heavens kill undead. This is more a multiplayer build than single player one.

Medic Skills:
Undead killing/healing:
20 prayer
1 meditation (prayer gives this a synergy, meditation main aura)
20 holy bolt
20 blessed hammer (holy bolt damage synergy)
20 fist of the heavens
whatever you want rest of points

FoH'er:
20 fist of the heavens
20 holy bolt
20 holy shock
20 conviction

More holy element builds:

Mixed freeze/shocker:
4 zeal
20 holy freeze
20 resist cold
20 holy shock
20 resist lightning
rest in probably holy shield or zeal

Mixed physical/shocker:
20 zeal
20 lightning
20 resist lightning
20 sacrifice

sub cold for lightning for mixed freezer/physical

Avenger: avengers use vengeace as an attack. They seem to attack slower than others and can only attck one monster at a time, but never have immunity problems and conviction is a great support aura.

20 conviction
up to 60 in resist element auras
1-20 in vengeance depending on mana

I don't know... I thought that was one of the best threads such an initial post could have started. Very informative, very funny, very interesting.

Oh, and your post and minionman's had some decent stuff there, too.

Now, had we wanted to be mean...

The steps:
1) buy a dictionary
2) take 3 years of english
3) lurk for 6 months
4) post the apology for you abomination of a first post
5) repeat your question in the proper forum, in real english, without being a wanker
6) conviction is th3 b3sto
7) rinse and repeat

Just honest. My response was perfectly accurate. That is how I view D2 basics, really. Click, click click. Pick up better weapon. Kill bigger monsters. Repeat.

A vague question gets a vague answer. That's about the only way it can go. If one wants me to explain more, I will ;)
