Quote:The whole concept for this game is stupid. A MMO where you can only party with like 8 people, and the game is nothing but preset missionss.. ANd there isnt even any new content until you buy an expansion pack. IT'S not going to make enough money and will be shutdown after a month; you'll see

I am confused as to your response? I found the quote humorous for it was Diablo II in a nutshell, and a kid was saying it was doomed. What do you mean in this post (since the thread appears to be deleted its confusing)?

o.O your right is deleted... It was working before I posted and I'm sure it was it... Well anyway I just thought it was funny that the guy thought that Guild Wars is going to be bad, because it had said attributes, all of which was 'Diablo II in a nutshell' as you put.
(you weren't missing out on much by not being able to read the thread, it was just a bunch of flames after that)

Well, it's a good thing that at least one moron won't be buying it.

When's the beta start for this again? Just wondering, since I know the Lurker crowd will have significant interest in this game.

No official date announced yet

Some estimates suggested Aug 2004

but it looks to me like that's slipped already.

No public beta, but AN will open up the game to the world for the October 29-31 weekend.
I'll certainly be there, and see how far the world has went. ;)

So AN can implement killer pumpkins that spawncamp you, on Oct 31. I mean, they need a holiday to justify showing off their streaming technology, no? :D

P.S: The GW Beta will begin immediately afterwards, so it says on the guild wars site.

If it's going to be completely free outside upgrades, that's going to create a D2-like atmosphere, aka a ratio of people you can actually play with to people who can only be described as less-than-pleasant of 1:10,000, I'm not going to have much hope for it.

Well, in the E3 For Everyone event people were decent and fun to play with, I don't see how this would be different.
And no it wasn't sarcasm, l live in Israel and am not really knowledgeable with christian holiday dates.

Yes, all the Christians dress up as ghouls and go house to house to beg for candy. Later, hoped up on their sugar, they throw toilet paper into trees, and many other pranks.
Heh, just the visual I had.
Quote:The Celts coalesced as a society circa 800 BCE. They were located in what is now the United Kingdom, much of Western Europe and an isolated enclave in what is now Turkey. They held a major celebration near the end of our month of October, which they called called "Samhain", a festival to recognize the end of summer. The story that "Samhain" was a Celtic God of the Dead is a myth. However, it has been repeated so often by conservative Christian and secular sources that it has taken on a life of its own.
The Celts believed that the veil between this world and the next was thinnest at this time of year. Friends and relatives who had died would often return, with their souls inhabiting an animal - often a black cat. Black cats have remained a symbol of Halloween down to the present time.
In celebration of the recently completed harvest, Celts would give offerings of food to the Gods. They often went from door to door to collect food to donate to their deities. Also, young Celts would ask the townspeople for kindling and wood, and take it to top of the hill for the Samhain bonfire. These are two of the possible origins of present day "trick or treating."
Samhain was a fire festival. Sacred bonfires were lit on the tops of hills in honor of the Gods. The townspeople would take an ember from the bonfire to their home and re-light the fire in their family hearth. The ember would usually be carried in a holder - often a turnip or gourd. They felt nervous about walking home in the dark; they were afraid of evil spirits. So they dressed up in costumes and carved scary faces in their ember holders. They hoped that the spirits would be frightened and not bother them. Children continue to dress up today in various costumes. Pumpkins are now the objects of choice to carve faces into.
Wiccans and some other Neopagans base their religious faith on the religion of the Celts. They continue to celebrate Samhain today.

Go and watch the developer interview (I am a Gamespot comlpete member, so I don't know if it's free to all, or what).
The developer in the video says everything exactly right. Their philosophy is fricken' fantastic. He echos what I said in the Diablo III thread. Guild Wars will be a game about player skill, not player time investment.
From watching the gameplay footage, and seeing those screenshots, this game looks like Diablo 2 + WoW. It's like they copied elements from WoW (scenerey, skills, character creation, combat) and added in Diablo 2 characters (Just look at the chracter select screen) and gameplay (clicky-clicky, 8 player groups, all instances). The only difference between what I was talking about before about player skill, and what the developer says about skill, is type of skill. He's talking about skill at strategizing, and I'm talking about proficiency with manipulating the combat interface, and having direct control over how you attack.
But yeah, this looks like it's going to be a great game. A clear step up from Diablo 2, and maybe not quite as large as WoW and other MMORPGs. A good medium that will probably find a niche, but I fear that it will eventually die out, due to oversaturation. It could possibly be a gem that no one plays because of other higher profile games...

Halloween is also not common to all Christian orientated countries, btw. I think it is only 'really' celebrated in the US. In Germany, it was not celebrated at all until recently. Some years ago, people started to have Halloween parties (most of them don't dress up, though, they just get drunk like they always do), but the whole 'trick or treat' stuff is still not done here at all. I think it is pretty much the same in the rest of Europe.

Well, considering that you can pick and choose who to play PvE with, I don't think that would be a real problem.
The way the game works, is PvE is divided in "Missions". Each mission can be completed as many times as you want, but you only get the finishing reward once. Note - you will not have to redo missions over and over, just to gain levels. Anyways, each mission has an "Outpost" area, with the idea that everyone who wants to do that mission is there. In there, people can socialise, plan, and pick their teams. After the team is ready, it enters the instancecd mission, meaning that they are the only people in the area. No lamers. No trainers. No l33t-speakers. No leechers. If your team ended up with a prick, it's a simple matter to restart the mission, and kick him out of the team - although I have never had to do that during the GW E3 for everyone event.

European festivals have changed alot over the centuries. In a way Germany does celebrate the remnant of the fall festival, you call it Oktoberfest. No one cares about the vernal equinox, or the harvest anymore, but in some form the old pagan and farm celebrations live on. America is rife with merchandising, so every holiday gets turned into a monetary obligation to someone. We are also that great melting pot, so we have a little of everything here.
