This is why I push FreeSpace again. I've had some die hard FPS players who hated flight sims just love it. The learning curve is shallow, and frag fests in asteriod fields are fun. :) It seems like there are a lot of controls, but you really don't need to use too many of them, especially if you are playing head to head. There are also quite a few co-op options as well.

The source code for the game was also released so you can get a version of it for free if you look around enough. Heck, even my wife who detested X-Wing, Janes, and MS Flight sim loves this game. But I'll stop pimping it now.

I'm trying, I really am!
I googled up a few reviews for freespace and it looks exactly like a game I would love.

I'll keep you posted ;)

hmmm, if you want suggestions for war3 custom maps...

Arkguil tower defence, 100 towers is ok, Bob8c is better though, but a lot harder. (I'm biased, I made bob8c). The official Arks are ok.

Wintermaul. The early ones are good, as is wintermaul wars. later ones included new features, without actually rebalancing the game, and just tended to be messed up.

Enfos, excellent team game, until one team starss spamming spells, of course this might be less of a problem at a LAN party where the imminent risk of a close up view of a fist is always present

Tides of blood, another good one, but has some ugly imbalances, again, with friends at a LAN party I assume you can trut your opposition not to abuse them.

Zoator TD (first ZTD) another excellent game, not much more to be said

ZTD2, not particularly amazing, last time I played there were some glaring bugs (caused by a patch though, IIRC), the entire game to be looked at before it becomes as good as ZTD1, although I don't know if it's being developed anymore, because:

Zoator Survivor TD. Mostly very good game, more fun when people don't use 'options'

Xhero siege. Fun, although the enemy count suddenly jumps 20 minutes in which is ugly without a mega computer (i.e. with my computer)

Night Of The Dead, should make a great LAN party game as the lag won't be very high. You need good reflexes, the ability to see in the dark and preferably a high resolution - would benefit greatly from voice communication, which you have available at a LAN party ;-)

DOTA, I think someone mentioned this. Allstars could be fun with friends over a LAN to help reduce the imbalance abuse, otherwise go for a DX or EX version.

10way TD, I can't get passed level5, mostly due to the quality of my teammates, might be easier if you're all in the same room.

BTW, were you playing Azure TD?

wow, that's a lot of suggestions!
Thanks Bob. :)

The list of maps has been forwarded to my LAN group for closer inspection (after our experience with custom games last time I think they will be looking forward to some more maps).

Unfortunately I don't know the name of the game we played on Tuesday, I'll ask tomorrow, at our next session :). There were three (iirc) boss rounds (10, 20, 30) with Pit Lords, Banshees and MegaSlimes, maybe that's enough to identify the game.

Thanks again

Nuur

EDIT: One phonecall later I can confirm that it was indeed Azure TD. Bob8c has been given top priority for tomorrow by me :)

Azure TD is fun. Blizzard TD is less so, because it's impossible to support your allies at all except with cash donations.

On topic: I also do recommend Q3A. Give it a try. It may be old, but it's quick, colorful and very entertaining.
Furthermore it hasn't really got to do anything with 'the Quake series', it even features some gladiators from the 'doom series', and many more.

NuurAbSaal,Sep 24 2004, 12:54 AM Wrote:...mmmmm, Sturmovik, I'm a sucker for flight sims, ever since the good ole days of b/w Fokker triplane. I hope it's not too arcady (is that a word?).

IL2: Forgotten Battles— arcade-ish? How do I say this... I'm still trying to get the hang of re-starting a P-38's engine in mid-flight. Whilst in single-engined flight, I switch into the dead motor, throttle back to 30% power, prop governor all the way down, and close the radiator. Un-feather the dead prop, then I try kicking on the starter.

Here's the tricky part: the engine spools up— you can tell as the appropriate motor's needle on manifold pressure gauge drops into normal aspiration, then jumps up as the turbocharger starts turning. But if you don't feed the engine enough gas in time, the motor starves out again and goes cold once more. It's taken me two or three tries to crank one of those Allisons and keep it lit (in flight).

This ain't no Afterburner ported to PC, I assure you. Right now I'm trying to learn the ropes in Single Player mode through a pilot career with the Red Air Force, flying the cannon-armed variant of the MiG-3 stretch. Talk around the hangar says that the MiG is a fast little high-altitude kite— swift in the long stretch while not as agile as some may like (especially at low altitude). What I didn't know was that the MiG's speed meant that the airframe's redline lay somewhere within her dive limits: you point that sucker down and dive in on a German far below you— make sure you don't go too fast, or you'll find significantly important pieces of MiG now missing from your crate!

sounds...interesting :)

So it's more of a sim, which kinda rules it out for LAN play, as most of my buddies have never played a flight sim before and would soon be frustrated by my 1337/MaD skillz ;) .

Thanks for the info

Actually, there are Cooperative missions and Campaign missions for the MP aspect of the sim as well, so you don't neccessarily have to fly against each other.

You can conceivably lump together as a squadron and take on some AI-controlled opponents in a mission.

And you don't need to fly, either. Many of the flyable crates have at least a back-seat gunner (think of the T-47s on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back) and you can hitch a ride aboard the Heinkel and the Russian TB-3 bombers and man a gun position instead of piloting.

The real downer, though: the version 2.01 patch is 102 megabytes in size. Good news is, the patch isn't about fixing game-killing bugs or whatnot, but rather instead offers new maps, new campaigns, and adds some more airplanes. Version 2.02 fixes some glitches with the newly-added planes and clocks in at only 20 MB (though you need to have the 2.01 monster installed in order to apply 2.02 properly)

Well, to rip off Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K from Men in Black— sure thing, slick. But let me tell you something about your 'skillz'. Right now, they mean absolutely dick. ;)

Targetting padlock on an enemy crate doesn't utilize "Spidey-sense" in this sim. Most other sims, you hit the Target Next Enemy key and your viewpoint psychically focuses in on the requested subject, even if said object is 1000 yards on your six o'clock low. Which means enemies will never sneak up on you, so long as you keep tapping the "E" key in the constant lookout for approaching enemies. Conversely, you wouldn't be able to sneak up on an AI-controlled machine either, thanks to the computer's psychic ability to know where your plane is at all times...

...that doesn't happen in IL2. In order to target an enemy plane for Padlock View mode, said crate has to be within reasonable visual range and close to the center of your current field of view in order to "lock-on". In other words, you have to actually see and know the enemy is there before you can start tracking him with your "eyes". Which means that the bad guys can sneak up on you. Go ahead and tap away at that "Target Enemy" key. Won't work if the fellow's creeping in on your tail, unnoticed and unmolested.

Now, it wouldn't be fair if you couldn't do the same to the AI-controlled enemy, now would it? Guess what— you can.

And gunnery— bullets don't fly in a straight line. From factors as myriad as windage, gravity, or the last bounce the bullet took as it left the barrel, they don't go straight and true in real life. And if you set the appropriate switch in the Realism setting— they won't in the sim, either. The guns actually have kick— I've noticed the nose drop slightly on my cannon-armed MiG-3 when I make a shot, due to the recoil. And distance is a factor as well, since the hitting power of the bullets drop off as the range increases. Many of the crates sport armor plate protecting the cockpit or engines— you'll notice a lot of funny, angular smoke streaks streaming away from an IL2 that's being shot at: those are from the ricochetting bullets that couldn't get through the armor tub set in the fuselage. Shooting from 800 yards out doesn't help one's chances at downing a heavy like a B-17 or the like, not unless you're sporting cannons. (Russian Fun Fact: did you know the MiG-3 has no armor? I found that out myself when one "Golden BB" blasted my engine ablaze and killed my pilot on his first sortie near a German airfield).

Your engines will overheat of you don't tend to the radiator or power settings. Jet engines are notoriously balky and tempermental— you'll soon wonder if the nickname of "Shooting Star" was really crafted in Lockheed's traditional line of naming aircraft in allusion to astronomy, or if it was in reference to the plague of onboard fires the engine will induce if you abuse it even slightly! (hint: go very gentle on the throttle in order to stay functional).

Getting a kill is going to be tough. Then again, being a kill for the other guy may be a whole lot easier... though that's the bad side of it, no?

hmmm, for the record, I have spent thousands of hours flying planes on my computer, from the golden days of black and white Fokker Triplane to F/A-18 Hornet, I would like to think that I in fact possess those mad skillz I was talking about.

And you are talking about knowing and getting used to the particulars of a certain game, that's not necessarily "flight skill"... (virtual flight skill, of course).

I iz teh ubar!!!

Ack, my pride, my beautiful pride, it hurts so bad!!!

I've out-circled Fokker Triplanes while in an SPAD XIII. I've brought in a Mustang with a broken back ("...durned 88's done scuffed my vehicle!") for a survivable belly landing in the Ardennes (belly-in because I lost the gear in a rough-field landing I made to "rescue" my downed wingman). And I've stalled an F-19 under full control (yes, my flight sim experience is that old) to bring it into a virtual hover. I am elite! ...

... and in IL2, I have had an oppurtunity to land a MiG-3 three times so far (only three because every other sortie ended with me decorating the landscape in charred black and blood red— over a relatively wide area of ground). And by golly, one of these days I'll actually keep that danged MiG on her wheels before I come to a complete stop! If I had a callsign already, it'd be "Turtle". As in up-ended onto my back with my legs waggling lazily towards the sky.

Skillz save you not. ;)

First time I flipped my MiG onto its back was after having it shot up a bit by a Bf109 over Moscow. Smoking a bit, and I had a fuel leak, but I was able to dis-engage and get the MiG back home. Naturally, I turtled the kite, but as I was there hanging upside-down in the cockpit and watching my view turn a bit red under the negative-G loading, I could not help but notice a white stream flowing from a point on my inner wing panel down to the ground. I then realized that that was the fuel flowing out of a puncture in the tank. I hit the bailout key and watched my pilot pop out of the inverted MiG and run some distance away before leaping to the ground in "duck and cover" fashion. MiG never lit up, though. That's not always the case. Fires suck. While flying a Bf110 in the Crimea, a Russian P-40 that snuck in on me and set my right engine aflame. Turning northwest for home with this trail of fire streaming off my crate, I could only pray that the wing would hold together just a little while longer... then the inner left wing began to smoke, and minutes later my left wing's fuel tank caught fire. Two gouts of flame flowing off my crate kinda told me that now was a pretty good time to join the caterpillar club, so I left.

If you crash-land your crate within enemy territory, you will notice geysers of black earth begin to erupt around you. Yeah, in this sim the field artillery will try to murder you and your machine if you elect to stay strapped in.

Bailing out isn't all that safe either. The sim models three possible states of a parachuting pilot: 1) fine and dandy, hanging like string candy; 2) dead guy hanging from the 'chute harness; 3) very unlucky fellow whose parachute just got popped, plummeting to certain death. The anti-aircraft artillery doesn't give a rat about us flyboys— you will be shot at by flak shells and guns if you do something as foolish as bailing out over the place you just happen to be bombing!

And that's all dependent if you manage to get out of the crate alive. Bailout logic applied in the sim will only allow you to leave the plane if it is physically possible for you. There will be instances where a pilot never manages to egress. And altitude is key: you can still suffer a fatal impact if you bail out too low and the just-deployed parachute envelope has not deccelerated you quickly enough for safe landing. And in one memorable instance that I saw play out in the sim, getting out may not save you in time if your plane is on fire. Switching to an external view of an enemy '109 that whose engine was aflame, I watched the pilot pop the canopy, ready to leap away from the stricken fighter. Switching back to cockpit view, I saw this smear of flame and smoke erupt in the sky. The burning Messerschmidt exploded. Going back to external views of the enemy, the camera locked onto the escaping pilot (externals go to enemy machines or airmen who'v bailed out). Pilot was already in a "dead" pose and falling to earth with no paracute deployed. He was not far enough away from his machine when it detonated.

Because there aren't any good ones, and NWN in general sucks? Then again, maybe my opinion is biased.
