In his absence, I would speculate that the ads are being aired after 9:00 p.m., which is, I think, the magic hour past which offensive language can be aired.

A bold and innovative television public awareness campaign about domestic violence will not be shown on Calgary television stations due to an unfavourable ruling from the Television Bureau of Canada (TVB).

The TVB denied the HomeFront Society of Calgary approval to run the two public service announcements because they were deemed too graphic according to their Telecaster Guidelines. Given the failure to receive TVB approval, local Calgary televisions stations have decided not to run the PSAs (public service announcements).

“The purpose of the PSAs is to shine a light on domestic abuse by putting domestic violence situations in public places where it would not be tolerated.”
With the support of Ogilvy & Mather Calgary, HomeFront is currently appealing the TVB’s decision.

I liked the PSAs, but I'm not surprised that TV stations won't air them. I bet if they just curbed the language a bit they might stand a chance.

Did any other Canadians note a marked similarity between these PSAs and the ones that Canadian Hockey runs? The "If it's not okay here, then why is it okay here?" message format is almost exactly the same.

The CRTC is the governing body for what is allowed to get on Canadian TV. This "TBC" is an organization that seems to include most of the stations, with the notable exception of the largest (the CBC), as well as a number of advertising sales agencies.

The TBC includes a committee that clears PSAs used by the non-CBC stations. Acceptance of this committee's recommendations are voluntary.

I feel a whole lot better.

I had to check up on "TBC" as well. I was unfamilar with that organisation.

SEXtv is a member of TBC, like every other CityTV channel. I'm a bit surprised that they would go along with TBCs ruling, given the fact that they show clips of hardcore porn and that CityTV airs softcore porn (late Saturday nights).

Also, I think (confirm/deny?) that the CRTC doesn't regulate a lot of the stuff that is aired on Canadian television. I watched an interview with a spokesperson from the CRTC who said that they pretty much leave the Canadian stations alone UNLESS there is a serious complaint. If they get a complaint, they take action. I don't know what sort of action they might take.

Fair enough. I had made an incorrect assumption about them being aired. You know what they say about assumptions. I've always been an ass, and that ain't changin'. Since I'm not a resident of Calgary, I couldn't say for sure if they were being aired or not. Good catch, though.

All I read of the website was that they're an organization raising awareness of domestic violence. Domestic violence is one of those things that will probably never affect me directly, since I'm not likely to beat my spouse into obivion for trivial things. I will, however, beat her into oblivion for such things as, say, her trying to kill me. *cough*

The fact that they're not being aired doesn't really matter. The message is the same, and they still have an audience, as is demonstrated by this thread. Those who view the clips are fulfilling those clips' purpose for existence. What good is a message when no one is there to hear it?

I was recently linked to your two PSAs, and I after watching them I

No other PSA has ever driven its message home as well as these two
have.&nbsp; They are shocking, sure, but so is domestic violence.&nbsp; I'm not
really surprised that you can't air them on TV, but I will be sure to

You know, I am not one for violence. It bothers me on a deep and personal level. And I have always tried to resolve everything with non violence...

But if somebody pulled that crap in my presense, I would give them the worst beating they have ever had in their whole life. And as they lay there, broken, bruised, beaten, bloody, and battered, I would explain to them this is how it feels to be small, helpless, and a victim. I would then procede to educate them on the proper treatment of the fairer sex, and the finer points of Southern Graces, driving my point home with proper enforcement as the situation demands. I would have to enlighten the twit on all the things his mama never taught him, like offering your coat to a lady if she so much as shivers, saying please and thank you, opening doors for the women folk, and general kindness.

Have done this very thing on several occasions. No regret. Real men don't sit by and let this crap happen. Men that do aren't men at all.

Just looking at those made my blood boil. Argh. I had to spend a good while cooling off and composing my self just so I could type out a somewhat civilized reply.

Those videos were uncomfortable to watch, but I've volunteered at a few battered women's shelters. Cases where husbands beat their wives in front of their kids.

I firmly believe that domestic violence should be a crime punishable by putting somebody in the stocks, out in public. With a big sign saying "SLAP ME!"

Of course... Feeding them to the gators or tying them to a tree covered in something sticky so the fire ants will get em works for me as well.
