New games to play?
#1
I was thinking about geting some new game(s) the other day, but could not realy think of a single game that I had heared or seen that I thought was a "must". Of course, I have not seen or heared about many, but in general, I have a feeling there are much less interesting games out there these days, most of them are all similar as well.

So, do you fellow lurkers have any ideas, hints or sugestions for games that would be fun and interesting to get? It doesn't have to be the very latest games, a bit older ones are also OK (for really old games I do have quite a good feeling of what exist that could be of interest for me, so keep it somewhat current, like last two years or something).

Thanks in advance for any input.

Howdy Jarulf,

On which platform are you planning on playing said games? PC only? Lately I've bought a ton of games and only a select few would be what I would deem keepers. For the PC Sid Meier's Pirates is a load of fun. Also Warlords Battlecry III kept me interested for a good long time. My brother is currently trying to addict me to Call Of Duty, but I don't seem to be that into it. His whole clan though seems to have switched over from CS to play it though so I might kinda off on that one. Need more? Enigma : Rising Tide is fun once you learn the controls and a lil patience ( WWII sub sim) where you can play as either the axis or the allies and can be in a sub or onboard a plethora of anti-sub ships. Thats all I can think of for now. Good luck with your gaming acquisitions.

I don't know if you played Knights of the Old Republic when it came out (probably you did). If not, I'd definitely recommend that as a great single-player action/RPG.

Hmmm...well, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines just came out a short while ago, as did The Sims 2. If you've actually got a PS2 then Katamari is an insane game if you enjoy things that are just way out there. Hmmm...not really sure what else to list...a lot of the new releases I see are FPSs and well...those are not usually worth the effort.

The only games that were "must have" for me were D2 and D2:LoD, since then, no game has been able to generate that "must have" feel for me until I tried the Guild Wars during the world preview event.

I was instantly hooked, and the beta weekend events just left me wanting more. Guild Wars is the only game I am really looking forward to at the moment. I have yet to try WoW though, I will definately try it when the Europe Open Beta (finally) begins.

I used to really looking forward to WoW, but somehow I felt let down when I found out the game was not release on the same day world wide. Most of my gaming friends will probably get a few characters to the highest level/end game by the time I try the open beta. That's not fun to me.

But since Guild Wars world preview event happened, I found my interest in WoW waning (even before I try it!). With the limited gaming time I have nowadays, I can't see myself paying a monthly fee to play a game, unless WoW is really that good and causes me to sacrifice my sleeping hours for it. Hmm... that's probably not a long term thing.

If you have not tried Guild Wars, I highly recommed it, try getting a weekend event activation code for the coming January event. Many sites offer free activation code, I obtained one fore the December event, and had already secured another for the January's. I will keep on doing this until the pre-order is available in UK.

I was actually asked if I wanted to join the alpha test for it but I declained for various reason. Will have to see if I try it out later. On top of that, I am not sure multiplayer games is my cup of tea.

What types of games do you usually like?

Civilization type or space expansion games keep me going for a long time, Lords of magic s another one you may try out, there are many different strategies for combat and resources you can try with the different faiths in the game.

:D Oh , then you must at least try it for a spin , check out the scenery , sound effects , spell effects and stuff ! I only had time to jump in on one world event -- Air Force Reserves normally prevents me from playing during Beta events --- what I've seen , and experienced so far has left me thirsting for more !

I'll never be good at it , but I will have fun anyways  I still stink at Diablo and I'm still playing

I second this opinion!

I decided to pick up the game again, and I'm roughly half way through the game after a day and night of intense playing :P.

If you like Baldurs Gate (which I personally feel is the best turned base/real time game) KoTR will engulf you.

Be sure to bring lots of snacks before you start. :D

Well, you could try this old game called Diablo, that you might not even remember anymore. There's lots of intricacies and nuances, which will be over your head for a while, but with a lot of practice, you would probably enjoy it. There's a few guides around, but really nothing that good, so just pick up the game and figure things out for yourself.

Personally, I just picked up Spellforce: Gold Edition (comes with Breath of Winter expansion pack). RPG/RTS mix done right, with story and interesting flavorful decisions. The difficulty varies greatly depending on your choice of open-ended character builds, so long as you do not spread yourself too thin trying to be everything, you'll do fine. I tricked a bunch of trolls I was their idol god :) Lovely atmopshere, music and graphics. Soothing singing and voice acted dialogue everywhere.

I am also in love with Guild Wars. I do have misgivings, but there are so many things done right! Maybe I will not like it so much when it launches--however so many normal actions which become problematic are virtually non-issues in GW. Item drops? No contest. Items preassigned to different people. No kill stealing either. No camping against other people for the same monster. So many team play aspects are done right! It could use improvement, but was very playable as of last beta event.

Changes will happen though. Whether Arena.net will cave in to unbalancing demands, or change the nature of the game when players grow and act out of original design--well. We'll see. I just hope it doesn't become another "grind" game to squeeze out money per time. That would be totally against GW's nature so far.

Have you tried Cyberlore's Majesty: A Fantasy Kingdom sim? Definitely a must-have in my mind. Just the right amount of chaos against plans and counterstrategy for magic to happen. Inspired pandemonium really. Both interesting and balanced, by cluttering itself with nutty heroes who level per swing depending on how strong their enemy is. Dragon raiding your town? Grab a handful of rangers fresh off the turnip truck. Sure, most of them will die without help, but those that live against the dragon will be veterans! If they live. If you want elves though, you'll have to live with their gambling casinos cluttering up your base and drawing away taxable revenue. Brothels too! These elves demand their pampered lifestyle. Although, such brothels makes for interesting times when a nude barbarian, old wizard codger always losing his spellbook, lost-boy were-bear shapeshifter and priestess necrophile all get together in the same brothel.

Before I forget to mention, in Majesty you don't get direct control over your heroes. Nope, they're all replete with personalities of their own. Zealous, Greedy, City-dwelling, retiring, or just plain war-crazy, they're all willing to make a buck if your bountiy is high enough.

In fact, I think I'll go play it again. . . after spellforce.

Also a plus for majesty, is that you can usually find it for bargain bin prices, especially on ebay. Although its campaign missions have limited replay value, it's easy to sink a few days into it, and is fun to come back to once in a while for a game or two. Well worth the price IMHO.

Also, there are a couple of advanced difficulty missions available for download from Cyberlore.

Ah! Are you aware there's a gold edition with expansion pack now? Gold edition retails cheap too :) Game is only a few? years old (that or I'm getting old). Lots of interesting features in Northern Expansion pack (comes with gold edition).

Baaj, if you haven't had the pleasure, grab that gold edition! or the northen expansion.

Finding fellow Majesty players makes me all tingly inside, ready to stick a 200 gold piece bounty for the destruction of my neighbor's house.

So, you're not going to play/subscribe to WOW (World of Walking)? ;)

Actually, after I lent the regular edition to a friend(and never saw it again), I purchased the gold edition on Ebay for $10, including shipping.

A couple of the later missions were very challenging, and lots of fun to figure out the best way to complete.

I am currently enjoying Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Pain Killer.

I play Pain Killer for the most part. Interesting ideas for the weapons, only five guns the whole game, but each gun has two firing modes which is essentially two guns in one.

Also anything in the Age of Empires/Mythology series will be a good buy.

Some replies.

I won't go for WoW, mainly because I feel the monthly fee is not for me. I can go a month without being able to play, or play very little and also I feel that I get far more for buying a new game every other month than paying to play a game I allredy have for two month- But that is me, otherwise I would have had it allready.

As for what type of games I playke. Here is a list of some of my absolute favorites (in no particular order except perhaps time).

Really good (good=playing a lot for a long time)
Lords of Midnight
Civilization
Panzer General (including PG 2)
Diablo
Duke Nukem (mostly with friends at University)
Delta Force
Sim City (all versions)

Others I liked a lot (for style, play, enjoyment or whatever, mostly recent since I forget older ones)
Baldurs Gate 2
Planescape Torment
Master of Orion
Raise of Nations (liked the concept,I play RTS mostly solo)
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Beneath a Steel Sky (actually solved it all myself with no guide help, a rare for me)
Might and Magic VII
Master of Magic

Hmm, I will probably remember more later. That is a hint at least.

I don't see Xcom on your game list. It's one of my must-have picks. The Xcom series is mainly a squad level turn based tactical sim where you take the role of the earth's defenders from an alien menace.

Much of the game play is spent in combat, but to prepare for these combats there is a wealth of technology to research(after capturing it from the aliens of course), bases to build, and enemy UFOs to shoot down with your intercepters.

I have found very few games that can match the feel of Xcom's combat; when you walk around the corner of that small UFO in dead silence, the sharp report of the plasma pistol from the alien standing right on the other side of the corner raises the pulse quite nicely.

Although dated, the original Xcom: UFO defense, its clone Xcom: terror from the deep, and the newer Xcom: apocalypse are all still fun to play today. They are also available in a collector's edition for bargain bin prices as well.

EDIT: misplaced word

Between civilization and the "heros" and" moo", you covered all the types of games I would have suggested. I guess if you don't have the 2's and 3's of some of these games, go for them.

In civilization, if you like building really huge empires, go for civ 2, if you liek more diplomacy and smaller empires, go for 3.
