Why aren't porn stars arrested for prostitution?

Well, last year here in New Zealand it was legalized, along with brothel ownership (and same sex marriage, and stealing land from 'the natives', and banning smoking in workplaces ... that's right, enjoy a prostitute at a brothel, but you are a criminal if you smoke afterwards  . (Was a busy year for legislation here))

With all of the finance company craze that has been happening here over the past three to five years, I am surprised that I havent seen prostitute finance. "Sex for only 12 low monthly payments of $Y", "Buy now and pay no interest until March", or "Buy one, get one free" seem to have some sort of distasteful ring ;) .

What is not surprising, is that the brothels are usually located close to the Universities, where they have a large source of employees trying to "use others libidos to stay out of debt" :(

Okay, so what about this scenario:

A man solicits sex from various prostitutes and does the deeds in his car, which is equipped with hidden cameras. After the back-seat shenanigans, he tells them about the hidden cameras and asks them to sign a release stating that it's okay for the video to be distributed (after he gives them a few bucks extra of course). He goes on to distribute the porn film and makes money. Heck, the hookers even get residuals.

The original sex-for-money transaction is clearly illegal, but is it STILL illegal after the prostitute has signed a release stating she agreed to appear in the upcoming film?

I can envision all sorts of workarounds to this.

Here's another:

COPS episode 763-22-D

undercover cop: Hi
girl: Are you a cop
undercover cop: Nope
girl: I will perform sexual favours in exchange for money :whistling:
undercover cop: :w00t:

cut to scene of 281 cops rolling in and arresting the girl

girl: You didn't let me finish my sentence  I meant to say "I will perform sexual favours in exchange for money while we are being filmed for an upcoming pornographic movie release :shuriken: Here's a release I'd like you to sign B) "

cue ending
"one thirty two and bush I've got him at gunpoint"
"gunpoint one thirty two and bush coverage code three"

That was a rationalization, not a rational.  History has shown, again and again, that controlled legal prostitution spreads less STDs than does illegal prostitution.  The moralists make a fundemental mistake in thinking that making something illegal will make it go away.  The 'it keeps disease down' argument is a fallback position used by the moralists when they find that their bigoted arguments are insufficient.  They depend on two principles to get their way: (1) Whatever is said loud enough and often enough is accepted as truth.  (2) Most people would rather listen to authority than to do a little digging and a little thinking to establish the real truth.

Exactly Pete. Here in Holland prosititution is legal, but things like street prostitution is not legal except for a few streets in big cities, where there is a lot of control by the police, especially to protect this very vulnerable group of girls.
This means in Holland, that if you do not want to see prostitution, just don't go to the red light district and to those certain zones. While in other countries you see this poor girls standing in the freezing cold at some dark street.

I think the important idea here is that those girls (also in countries where it is illegal) are not ruthless criminals, they are victims. If they could get a better job, they would take it. Prostitution is a last resort. For this reason it is very important to regulate prostitution, especially in the interest of the girls which have to be protected against all kinds of maniacs.

The disease thing is another example. Of course regulation works better than prohibition.

Apparantly prosititutes deliver a "needed" service for a group of men. (probably the number of rapes would be much higher when there would be no prostitution).

To get back to deebye's first question. I think you have a point. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the one who pays does not take part in the act?

The last time I visited Amsterdam, I made sure that I visited the Red Light district. I just wanted to be able to say I had been there and saw it. Going through the Red Light district is weird. Naked ladies on display in storefronts -- it's like mannequins come to life, only uglier and they all smoke.

I must admit that I never visited the place, although I have been numerous times in amsterdam. I also never smoked weed, hash or any of those things.
For some reason our liberal policy on these subjects makes people bored with it, it is legal so it can't be fun. :)
The coffeeshops are anyway there just for foreigners.

One time going through state college's mall, I swear I saw people hired to be mannequins. They stood still in the display windows wearing (presumably) the store's outfits. That, or someone's playing a big practical joke and the store employees are in on it. BUT they were fairly good looking kids... just standing there trying to look natural while not moving or shifting around.

Freaked me out, it did.

Yeah, I never quite saw the fascination with that place either, other than the legal freedoms it represents. The dedicated hedonist knows of far more interesting and cheaper places to indulge. I've never wanted to pay for something that is given away free, and so I kind of view those who do as a bit desperate.

In fact, where I live the consequences of two consenting adults having sex in public for free are miniscule compared to the consequences of being caught having sex in private for money.

hint, hint tothose "make everything illegal" people. I get the feeling some times that the "tough on drugs, etc." people are the ones with the least control over those types of impulses, so they support the laws to cover it up.

It's actually sad that in the US such a significant number of people are incarcerated for drug convictions. The political feel good mantra of the 80's of a War on Drugs has been more of a war on US citizens that use drugs. The major factor that lead to this sorry state is the Federal mandatory minimum sentencing guidlines which supercedes the judicial sentencing process and was passed through congress with bipartisan support during Reagan, and then again under Clinton.

Some sobering realities; http://www.drugwarfacts.org/prison.htm

Unfortunately, it is going to take some politicians with cast iron underwear to undo this mess, since to repeal this crap willl unleash those "get tough on crime" pit bulls.

Um... Shennanigans, yes. You see I have this friend, let's call him Drathkan... :)

Once upon a time I was the Director of a mixed group of 50-100 mostly single software engineers from through out the world with an excess of money, hormones and time. For about five years, I was expected to go to ALL the parties... Let's just say that I had to change jobs or die.

They date. Welcome to my world... :)

... however, I woke up after high school and decided I wanted something different for my life. So deep down if I were honest with myself, I'm sitting in that ___-Con audience. In reality, I'm not. I dated, listened to what the women were interested in discussing, and learned how to interact with the human species. If the choice were between going out with friends to a hot wild party, or a science fiction convention I tended to go towards the party (which is where I met my wife). I also tended to have the common sense to leave well before the paddy wagons rolled in when things got out of hand.

Why aren't soldiers being arrested for assassination?
Why aren't bouncers being arrested for criminal assault?

Because that's the current interpretation of law.
In this case, it may have to do something with the male 'actor' being a professional, too. All we have is two professionals working together, coincidentally (well - more or less) having sexual intercourse.
Neither can the distributioners be prosecuted, for they don't sell the intercourse, but 'documentary' material on which intercourse is shown.
Lastly, for obvious reasons neither the customer nor his hand can be prosecuted. All that he maybe does pay 'her' is a load of slip creme. ;)

Hope this was clean enough.
