In-Game Pets in WOW?
#1
Some questions for those of you who have bought the (U.S.) WOW Collector's Edition:

The CE comes with three in-game pets (Lil'Diablo, Zergling and Panda).

1.) Will EVERY character that a CE-owner creates (in the release version) have a pet, or can just one single character (under your unique account) have one?

2.) Can you change pets on one character, or do you have to make a final binding choice?

3.) A question for Warlocks, Druids and Hunters: Will these CE in-game pets be of any additional strategic use for you? In the case of the Warlock, for example, will your in-game pet attack enemies or take away aggro from you? Or are these extra pets just for fun without any use?

4.) Can the in-game pets die (from monster attacks)? And if, how do you resurrect them?

Every character can have one.

Quote:2.) Can you change pets on one character, or do you have to make a final binding choice?
It is a final choice that is soulbound to your character.

Quote:3.) ... Or are these extra pets just for fun without any use?
'Fun' without any real use. They will cause you to get semi-frequent whispers from players asking where you got that pet from though. Also do not use one while doing any stealthy actions in the game as the pet itself does not selth and is a dead giveaway as to where you are. I have seen several rogues trying to sneak around that have a non-combat pet out that is dead give away of where they are at.

Quote:4.) Can the in-game pets die (from monster attacks)? And if, how do you resurrect them?
No, they do don't die from monster attacks, but do go away if you die. These types of pets are summoned/dismissed from an item you have in your inventory. So it is fairly simple to bring it out if it despawns for any reason (like lagging too far behind when you run somewhere).

The CE comes with three in-game pets (Lil'Diablo, Zergling and Panda).
Lil'Diablo is considered the 'coolest' of the 3 by most players and even has a fire-breathing animation that it does occasionly.
Zergling is... well its there, nuff said.
Panda is the 'cutest' of the 3 and to some what they would prefer over having the diablo.
So, if you go this route, try the zergling out on a character that you do not really expect to play much or would have strong reasons not to have a position giveaway non-combat pet out.

And for a bit of clarification for Nobby's sake, you can easily dismiss the pet by right clicking on the leash/stone for the critter so even if you are playing a stealthy character, you can still have your pet and only have it out when you want it to be.

And Ruvanal typoed about the pet dying to other monsters. They don't die from monster attacks.

For the record, I have seen a pet die from a couple odd mob attacks in beta (an AoE in the Sunken Temple, for example). However, it was very rare, and all I had to do was use the leash or whatever to summon him again right away. There's no raising or such to worry about. These pets are non-entities to the mobs, so they can only kill them accidentally. They can't target them and they won't aggro on them or even notice them.

Thanks for the info. As Diablo II modder and Undead fan, I'll most likely go with Lil'Diablo. Although the Zergling would fit an Undead Warlock look-wise very well, too :)

You sure about that, Roane? In my experience, the pet is a non-entity and isn't even targetted by enemies. I've had my panda sleeping peacefully at my feet while an enemy mage calls down AoE spells.

I'm an SC vet (I still play it from time to time - it's just that good), so the Zergling is a natural choice for me, Lurker or not.

While my Warrior uses the Zergling, and my Hunter uses Diablo, my Rogue ditched the panda and will probably get the Alliance-only cats (they're in the AH from time to time; I guess Alliance put them in the Gadgetzan AH and they get ferried to the OG AH from there) or perhaps a prairie dog. The cockatiels look pretty cool, too.

The panda just fit my Druid best. But my Gnomish Warlock just HAD to have a mini Diablo at his side. Looks great to have big D (er... little D?) on one side and an imp on the other.

Does the Zergling actually exist as StarCraft creature, or is this product just for the WOW CE?

The Blizzard zergling comes from StarCraft and Brood War, and they made a little nod to SC/BW by putting in the zergling as a WoW CE pet.

Regarding mobs aggroing on a pet ... looks like it can happen:

It happened for me in beta. I may even have bugged it at the time. Maybe they fixed it without mentioning it? I haven't seen it in live, but I haven't been in the same situation yet.

I know that the Alien-like Zergs exist in StarCraft, but haven't heard of or seen the young Zerglings yet. If almost every CE owner plays either Lil'Diablo or the Panda, I'll probably choose the Zergling at least for my Undead Warlock in the final release. It fits the Undead race look-wise very well, and it's much less obvious that this is a CE pet (unless you know StarCraft in and out, of course) :)

By the way, the Undead location "Tirisfal Glades" is terrific! It gets better and better the farther you explore that place. I like especially the creepy mood of that location, which adds so much more to the PvE atmosphere than, for example, the pretty Night Elf forest. "Tirisfal Glades" is definitely nothing for people with weak nerves ;) I've also made my first bat ride to Undercity after discovering the "Sepulcher" in the "Silverpine Forest" last night. I couldn't stop hammering on the "Print Screen" key, so beautiful was the ride over the glades and through the Undercity sewers.

I've lost my panda by running through a fire pit. :(

I'm currently preparing a DE Final Beta screenshots page with my Undead Warlock which should be ready in 1-2 days, or so :)

Zerglings are the first actual fighting unit you get in StarCraft if you're playing the Zerg race.

They're probably my favorite unit, though Firebats will eat them alive, just like zealots.

A group or two of cracklings with a few hydralisks and ultralisks is a potent ground-based force. Still gets torn apart by Irradiate or Maelstrom+Psionic Storm, though.

I rarely played Zerg, but I was on the receiving end of quite a few zergling rushes at the very beginning so they hold a special place in my heart - right next to my rage center. ;) Darn things were cute though as they were ripping me apart. Maybe that's why I sometimes choose the zergling pet over the others - to have one around that I know isn't going to eat me. ;)
