Creative Use of Game Mechanics
#1
I found this post by Caydiem interesting. We've seen the "creative use of game mechanics" label applied by Blizzard before, but this takes it a step further. They're all but saying "we put this in the game for you to use it in MC and BWL".

Quote:This is a creative use of game mechanics... not an exploit. It wouldn't be on the mind control options if we didn't intend for it to be there. Funny, isn't it, how these spellcasters are located right inside an instance that's very, very close to two raid dungeons where fire resistance plays a big role, hm? ;)

LOL, and that's what happens when you link directly to http://www.lurkerlounge.com/forums rather than the main page.

And when you fall behind on reading the Raid & Dungeons forum.

*sighs*

And for everyone who doesn't have a clue what the "creative use of game mechanism" is, would someone mind explaining? Becayse the tread doesn't tell anything.
There are three types of people in the world. Those who can count and those who can't.

In Blackrock Spire, there are orcs named Blackrock Spellbinders. When you fight them, they cast a buff on themselves that increases their fire resistance by 82. The trick is, you can Mind Control them and this spell is available for use by the priest doing the controlling, and can be cast on other players. What's more, it lasts 2 hours, and stacks with any other buffs (including Mark of the Wild or a Paladins Fire Resistance Aura).

The Spellbinders are all over, and it takes all of twenty seconds of clearing to reach the first one. You can easily bring a few priests in there and rotate your entire raid into the instance for the buff, then head into the Molten Core or Blackwing Lair with 82 additional fire resistance.

I believe it's one hour. It's a neat trick, but there are some downsides. First, you lose the buff the moment you die, and one can expect to die multiple times in raid instances no matter what your fire resistance is. However, it can be useful to use it against really tough bosses that your raid is working on downing the first one or two times. For example, you could buff your raid before downing Ragnaros or Vaelestraz. However, the downside with this is that it takes a long time to buff an entire raid. The cooldown on the buff is 30 seconds and mind control is finicky and lasts at most 1 minute and often much less than that. So, it takes a bunch of re-mind controling and work making sure you're buffing the right people and making sure that everyone gets to UBRS. (Herding 40 people in WoW is like trying to herd cats). Then, you finally have to get everyone to your destination. This whole process can take an extra 20-30 minutes out of your raid each time. But instead, you could've used that time to actually practice fighting the boss rather than buffing yourselves.

The other medium alternative is to just have a small party go to buff your main tanks. This only adds like 10 minutes of time to a fight and can help newer raiding guilds that haven't been able to deck their main tanks out in fire resist gear already. But if you already have a couple of main tanks that have 315+ fire resist, then there's no need to do this at all.

We could use it to buff casters who are 'cusped' between terrible and decent FR -- it'll help survivability of them in various fights. It may not be a bad idea, since you can stuff 15 in a BRS -- a decent warrior, and about 3 priests, the rest whomever needs the buff -- 3 priests would make for easy buffing of multiple people, only needing about 3 or 4 re-MCs to get any remainders..
