I've had a copy of Diablo sitting on a shelf for about 10 years, and just now started playing it. Neat game! I'd like to try battle.net, but I am at V1.00. I've downloaded the 1.09 patch. When I execute the patch, it opens a DOS prompt that has a flickering cursor, I see my hard drive fill up about 500 Megs or so, and the flickering cursor continues for over a day.
My question - Ideally, how long does it take to upgrade from V1.00 to V1.09 once you execute the patch file?

Where did you get that patch? The real patch certainly doesn't behave like that. I'd certainly advise you to do a virus and adware scan now, as you may have infected your computer with all sorts of nasty stuff.
The real patch takes about a second to apply.

I got it from
www.blizzard.com
Specifically,
http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msc0389p
It's been running all day. I'm up to about 2Gb consumed and it's still going. I think it's a memory leak, and not a virus though. I'll dump it and re-download.
<post-mortem> Everything is fine. Now - On to read existing forum posts as to why I can't get onto battle.net with no firewalls.

You can try the website below, if by some rare chance the official patch by Blizzard is flawed. This download worked fine for me.

Funny story... The last time I "install and play"ed Diablo, it happened so instantly that I thought it was opening an installer when the game started.
But yeah, the patch should also run extremely quickly.

I had allways problems to download any patch from that page. Then Ive found Blizzards ftp patch page:
http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/diablo/patches/pc/
If somebody seeks for patch I give him that ftp link. And I dont remmember any problem in all these years. Only thing you have to know is that
drtl means
Diablo Retail and
dshr means
Diablo Shareware. Explaining numbers is surely not necessary.... :-)

You first need to patch your game to 1.07, and then to 1.09
