Shenk getting killed by explosion

We're all probaly pretty familiar with the explosion when shenk dies. A bunch of stuff falls and nearby enemies die. But as I was fighting him today I saw the explosion go off, so I thought I had killed him off screen. But there he was, walking around with some health left. Then he gets hit by the falling stuff and dies. That seemed kind of weird.:o
