Star Trek MMO Beta first impressions
#1
Due to the vast number of races in the Star Trek universe the game's character generation is the most detailed i have ever seen. There are the known races: Human, Andorian, Bajoran, Bolian, Vulcan, etc as well as the ability to create a totally new species. Classes/professions as a Captain are few in number: Engineer, Science or Tactical but there are many fields within each to specialize or generalize. These few classes aren't a problem because you, the captain, are enhanced with the addition of Bridge Officers to your team. They can be obtained through purchase, trade or as rewards for completing missions. Bridge Officers are like player characters as they have their own xp levels and ranks, abilities to upgrade, and the ability to beam down and join you on away missions. Even when your soloing you will have 4 others on your team. When you group up your friend's Captain and Bridge Officers will make up the other members of the team.

The tutorial throws you into ground combat against Borg Drones right away followed by space combat with Borg Probes. This division of missions into ground/space combat is imo a novel way to break up what would other wise be a monotonous quest grind like seen in so many other MMOs. Refreshingly the missions aren't all combat, ambassador escort, mediate trade disputes, scan unknown entities, these all give a feeling of actually being a part of the Federation as seen in the TV shows. I have not played the Klingons yet, their mission in life is mostly combat so Cryptic Studios has made them into a 95% PvP, 5% PvE race. This was a huge dissapointment for me as i had planned on playing the "Horde" side as i did in WoW. Other planned races include the Romulans and Cardasians.

Gear upgrades are numerous and varied, the tutorial rewarded me with a phasor rifle and i picked up body armor, hypo spray medkits, and a improved personal shield off the fallen npcs. The Starbase in the Sol system had vendors everywhere and a exchange/market where i bought a stronger phasor bank for my light crusier star ship. My light crusier can be upgrade as well when i obtain enough prestige. Ship hulls are divided into 3 main groups: Crusier (tank), Escort (DPS), and Science (buff/debuff) with variations totaling 16? different types. With the ablity to upgrade each of those with new beam and missile weapons, bridge consoles, shields, warp cores and specials as well as customizing the looks and colors of the saucer, pylons and nacells no two ships will be alike.

Grouping into a fleet to complete space combat missions is automatic, similar to Wahammer Online so you don't have to compete for spawns with other Captains. One battle i was recently in involved 5 Federation light crusiers versus 3 Orion Pirate groups each consisting of 3 Battleships and their escorts. Space combat isn't lightning fast but rather a tactical dance with each of us trying to line up our ships's with the enemy's downed shield in order to deliver a photon torpedo to the hull. Beam weapons, torpedo and warp core explosions lighting up the darkness of space.

What is the penalty for death on away missions, bridge officiers dying and in space combat?

No, because Red Shirt = Instant Death from just being looked at. :whistling:
Sith Warriors - They only class that gets a new room added to their ship after leaving Hoth, they get a Brooncloset

When I was playing Star Trek on an Interdata machine, circa 1980, I wanted to beam a team down to a planet's surface. Scott asked me who I wanted to accompany me. I had not planned on going down myself, and since Scott was going to be that way I chose him. Not finding the planet particularly friendly, I decided to beam up. Unfortunately there was no one left on the bridge who knew how to work the transporter.

While mentally looking for some large object to smash the monitor, an engineer entered the computer facility with a group of dignintaries wearing hard hats. Suppressing a smirk with some effort, he dryly explained that the control room was like the bridge of a starship. I never did get off the planet, and that was enough of a Star Trek experience for me. Besides, the Star Trek transporters were borrowed from Forbidden Planet.

I find it fun, i have been a fan of things related to Star Trek since i got a board game called Star Fleet Battles back in the 80s, was all about starship combat. I can't say how long it will hold my attention, depends on how fast they add new content after the first few months.

As of right now there is zero death penalty, you don't loose your ship like in EVE. If your incapacitated in a away mission any of the other team members can try to revive you but a Science Officer (medic) can do it faster. If the entire team is killed you all revive at the last check point with no loss of progress.

How... boring.... Which means all it takes is time to do whatever you want.

Do Borg adapt to your weapons, becoming immune?

I got in the beta too (pre-ordered).

Initial impression: Beta needs a lot of work. I'm dubious they get it in before the game releases.

Space combat is... ok. What bothers me most is that you can't fly your spaceship like a spaceship. You can't roll or bank. You can't make a loop. That's... horrible. EVE online proves that is possible and that game is ANCIENT.

Ground combat is horrible. Walk up to an enemy and fire the phaser. pew pew pew. The end. wot? It's mindnumbingly boring. The characters and enemies feel like cardboard. There's no cover system, no challenge at all. Just click an enemy and fire away. You got a bit of healing and whatnot, but really, this feels horrible. WoW did it 1000x better.

I think the flaw of the game is that they tried to put two games in one. Space and ground. The end product is poor.

As far as lack of maneuverability i agree with you 100%, its just plain stupid that you can't angle up or down more than 45 degrees. I hope in the future they will change it and improve a host of other things as well but that is nature of a new game. Wow took years to get to the finely tuned product it is now. You saying the end product is poor before you have experienced more than a few days playing or before the game is even released is premature.

All combat in whatever game you play is pew pew pew weather your mage casting the same 2-3 spells over and over again or tank hitting the same 3-4 taunt abilities. You have only scratches the surface in ground combat. My Away Team went up against a Reman Captain "Boss" and were wiped out 3 times before i developed the tactics needed to take him down. Running up to him and pew pew pew was not an option. Positioning phaser turrets, shield generators, regen generators, and team members to knock him down and get a exposed flanking shot was almost as difficult as some WoW Bosses. The only difference was my progress leading up to him was saved so i didn't have to spend an hour clearing trash mobs again, didn't have to wait for rez effects to wear off, didn't have to wait for cool down timers, and i didn't port to the bank for more pots, i used the replicator to make more.

Is it a perfect game? Not even close but their working on it.
