It was obviously partially tongue-in-cheek. Still, I am somewhat worried. The medical profession has known for years that the day is slowly coming, that antibiotics won't work anymore, because tof the general overuse of them. This current killer pneumonia has two of the three qualities required for a pandemic civilization-ending plague. It's airborne and highly contagious (well that's my impression based on the admittedly little news I've seen about this) and it't incurable. Even if it's a little lacking in the third (mortality rate). Think about it, it's a flu that can kill you, a small mutation and it'll be a flu that will kill you.

Why?

1. If what you say is true, why bother staying sober, we are all gonna die! May as well go out blitzed beyond reason.

2. If false, you will still be alive, and will have gone on a magnificent bender, which is not always a bad thing in and of itself.

3. It is possible that for this flu, the best defense is a high alcohol density in the blood. (Not probable though)

4. With all of that in mind, make sure to put plenty of lime into the Gin and Tonics you are sucking down: it keeps away the scurvy, if not the flu. :D

Are we talking that one that people got from Asia recently? If so, I heared on thr radio today that it was not at all contagious easilly. Those that hd got ill, had either been hospital workers or people living in families and thus comming on close contact with people allready ill.

Not necessarily. Knowing who or what your enemy IS NOT is equally as important as knowing what your enemy IS. Of course, we know neither. If it turns out the bug becomes epidemic, I'm going to spend my life savings on whores and alcohol! ^_^

Well, not really. I've got a rather strong immune system, so I'm not all that worried. That, and I doubt that some pneumonia is going to be the kill-all disease. If I had to place my bets on the worst disease ever, I'd place it with the fictional Cobra virus in Richard Preston's (I'm rather certain he is the author - I don't have the book with me to check) The Cobra Event. That, or a nasty combination of an antibiotic-immune Yersinia pestis and the common cold. Now THAT would be a vile disease.

I had the flu last week (before I knew about this recent incident) and now reading this thread just brought it back to my mind.
I got it from my brother somehow, but now I feel perfectly fine and it is gone. I'm not dead yet.. but you're making me paranoid..

You are paranoid? If flu or cold symptoms are fading your body has beaten it. That should put a rest to any lingering paranoia.

I know how you feel though. I spent the last couple of days with the distinctive lump under the jaw telling me my body was fighting something. It's fading off today now, so I'm not the slightest bit concerned about it any more. Having said that, I couldn't help but wonder what it could be around Wednesday because I had been handling dozens of DVDs in stores on Monday and have no doubt that the brief swelling in my throat was a direct result . . . (I've caught some nasty bugs off products before when working in PC gaming retail and have no desire to repeat the experience)

Well I had, three flus or maybe two flus and a nasty cold over a 4 month period back in '97. At that time I had very little contact with people outside of work and the only thing I could safely say about how I caught them was people would sneeze into their hands, touch product boxes soon afterwards, I would come along to rearrange things, then maybe touch my nose . . . <_<

The worst one had me sick for about a month. My head was so plugged up at one point, that the pressure change when merely driving over a bridge gave me a temporary deafness and lightheadedness as I made the decent down the bridge to the northern shore. I was driving along on the flat with a 'completely detached from reality' sensation for about minute afterwards. :blink:

My boss caught it just after me and I watched him in the shop one day just trying not to fall over as he stood in the middle of the floor. Our sense of balance was relying very heavily on visual reference at the time, because our inner ears just couldn't do the job. :blink:
