In the original D&D, AD&D 2nd edition, and 3rd editon D&D, you roll stats first.
If you say so. I know we always did, but I thought that was house rules.
Third, Raise Dead is a spell just like all the others.
Yep. However, there are times when there's nothing left of a character to raise. I'd assumed that not reloading under those circumstances was what the people talking about hardcore meant. That, BTW, was one of the things that I did not like about BG. If your main character died (or even was stoned, IIRC) you had to reload or restart. No option to finish the combat with the rest of the party and then res the main character.
And, really, whoever saves the world -is- probably an amazingly powerful being from the start, thus excusing those suspicious attributes

Not all challenges are physical combat but the D&D series mostly rely on that.
