I'm messing round with the beta, as you do, levelling up my merc. I've now got to the point where nothing but a warpike will do (question: are WPs really that much better than cryptic axes etc?) but I can't seem to find any normal ones (to imbue) or socketed ones (to make honor). I can only gamble them (occasionally) or buy them in Harrogath (occasionally).
Is there a bar somewhere where all the warpikes hang out together?

The War Pike is TC90 (Or 87, something really up there), so you aren't going to find alot of them from monsters. But A5 Hell would be the best place to search.
Also, for a merc, War Pikes are all right, but a thresher can beat one hands down because it's so fast. :)

IIRC, mercs always attack at a fixed speed.

You are mistaken.
The
Weapon Speed Calculator can display merc weapon speeds, though the last time I checked it wasn't working right. In any case, they do attack faster with a faster weapon.

In the Beta TCs top out at 87. War Pike is level 85, which puts it in that class
Baal runs are a pretty safe bet for top treasure class items, most of the monsters and all of the chests drop the top TC
Just do some Baal runs and open everything
