got me to thinking....what's my favorite movie for and about pirates? Well, of course, you can't go wrong with Pirates of the Carribbean. It has an entertaining plot, well chosen actors, and believable settings. Johnny Depp was amazing as Captain Jack Sparrow, and it was a welcome change for Orlando Bloom, former elf playboy.

Actually, I just wanted an excuse to spout my favorite movies. Let's begin.

Yikes, rush hour 2...

Well, i think that movie preference is pretty subjective, unless you speak of jennifer lopez, who should be cast from the unions, never to 'grace' the screen (large or small) again.

Since i tagged rush hour 2 (about as enjoyable as your 2nd hour spent in rush hour traffic), i'll say that movies i enjoyed are (not an exhaustive list):
Office Space, Waydowntown, Monty Python: Holy Grail, Rushmore, Braveheart, Matrix (1st only), LOTRs, Showgirls/Kingpin (camp value), and i could go on and on, but i'm sleepy.

Off the top of my head, in no particular order:

Donny Darko - Very unique, unique take on time travel and/or psychosis (depending on who you ask). Not really scary like a horror flick, but definitely disturbing.

Alien - The definitive Sci-Fi horror flick, IMO. 'Nuff said.

Aliens - An action flick, diverging from the previous title's roots, but still a classic.

Terminator 1/2 - Do I have to explain? B)

Deep Impact - Way better than that overrated Armageddon crap.

Ghost Dog - Forest Whitaker as a black urban samurai. An independent film, IIRC. Well worth the watching.

Stargate - Just 'cuz I like it. Alot.

I could go on all night, but these are the ones that jumped out at me first.

Primal Fear - Excellently casted and acted, great story. My favorite movie by a long way.

Rocky IV - The best of a great anthology, unforgettable final fight.

Alongside the matrix movies, that pretty much covers my favorite movies.

Ah, I watched Superman last night. The intro was probably the funniest thing I've seen in my life. The destruction of Krypton was just awesome. :lol:

Zero Effect. Good ol' quirky detective character study. More or less a modern re-telling of the Sherlock Holmes/ Doc Watson dynamic, if Watson was disgruntled and Holmes kicked the eccentricity up a notch-- after spinning the dial several times!

When it comes to psychological stability among fictional detectives, Darryl Zero makes Adrian Monk look like Spock.

I personally like it too. Some people might not like the pacing, but I think it fits the theme of the story. And it has a quirky charm.

As for my quickie list.

- Anything by Sergio Leone.

- The Treasure of Sierra Madres.

- Startrek 2: Wrath of Khan. This isn't just a good "trek" movie, this is a good movie period. For the full effect, just watch "Wrath of Khan" and pretend they didn't make anymore sequels. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

edit ps: For those in a more adventurous mood, "Kayanisqaatsi" (however you spell it) and "Cremaster" series are pretty interesting.

...the correct spelling is: Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out of Balance). The other two movies in the triology are: Powaqqatsi (Life In Transformation) and Naqoyqatsi (Life as War). The first two are on DVD but the last film was released last year and is not available on DVD. This is a thought provoking trilogy that I second the recommendation to.

The local Blockbuster here had the first one on DVD for sale, but I'm hoping all 3 will come out in one single boxed set of some sort.

Agreed. I think the pacing is the charm, actually. Whitaker (dang, can't remember the character's name now) wasn't 'a black guy who thought he was a samurai', he was a samurai, with all the duties and obligations that mindset carries. The pacing was perfect for conveying that, IMO.

It's sort of like 28 Days Later, which I just saw recently. The commercials had seemed to make it out as a 'horror-zombie' flick a la Resident Evil, but when I actually sat down to watch it the pacing almost immediately seemed... off. It took me 20 or 30 minutes to figure out that it was supposed to be that way, that was what the director was trying for. And dangit, did it work. 28 Days Later may not be the scariest movie out there, but it was pretty darn creepy.

And as for whoever mentioned the Breakfast Club, I thought all the Brat Pack movies were a given. Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dutch, Uncle Buck (heck, anything with John Candy), Adventures in Babysitting - They just don't make movies like them anymore. :(
