I had "Hide/Show Hidden Files" set to 'show' (as I had easily found the HFmulti files a long ago), but didn't look any farther down on the list of options.
"Hide Protected Windows Operating Files" was checked (new option with XP) and because HFmulti uses a .drv extension, windows assumed that they were in the "Absolutely must protect at all costs" category.
Oh well, at least XP is overall better than ME......
