IMHO, Most yard light displays seem to be more of a commercial/consumerism thing unless they include a nativity or perhaps a large star above the display.

Quite right. I should have thought twice before posting. The lighted tree thing seems like Christmas to me, but I think you're probably more right with regard to general lighting as a display of consumerism, though it still seems like it's mostly christians who get involved (at least in my limited experience, and many parts of the world may be differrent).
