Thanks for your suggestions.
The HD jumper settings were at cable select, and I reset the jumper for a system with only 1 hard drive.
The optical drives are both on the same cable with their settings unchanged from the system in place before the upgrade.
There is an onboard HD monitor which I have enabled.
The CPU temp is 51 degrees. Target temp is listed in the BIOS as 45 degrees.
It still doesn't work.
There is a funny smell--not exactly a burned smell, but unpleasant kind of burned but not burned.
