The online multiplayer does match people up by experience (based on number of games played and win/loss record) but most of the games tend to be quick. Most winning strategies involve building to rush your opponent very early. If you can hold of the opponents rush then it's usually a good game. Or you can decide to rush yourself. The other option is to find players who agree to "no attack for 5 minutes" and other cheese like that.
