As Kandrathe says, the technology has been around for several years now. It has overcome most of its earlier problems and seems to have matured now - only in houses with very old power circuits, the throughput seems to suffer a bit.
Just to add some practical experience: I helped to install this technology at my brother's house over a year ago, and he uses it with a 1Mbit net access since then without any problems. Throughput is excellent, and his computer has survived several thunderstorms so far (a video recorder of his hasn't...). For the record, his electrical wirings are about 40 years old, IIRC.
