I'd get this one. A 42-inch Plasma for for $1999 is a pretty good deal, I suppose.
But since that is way out of your stated budget, I can't recommend that. I can't really recommend anything since I have no experience with LCDs. But, if you were looking to shop there, and only shop there, the PL1700 17" LCD Monitor looks like it would be a good investment, since it falls within your budget.
This monitor from new egg seems to fit your price range, and has some good reviews. But, this is only from looking around on the net for a bit; monitor selection is like TV selection, you really have to go see it before you buy it. That is, unless you know exactly what you want, but in this case you don't.
So, my advice? Look around. Get the size that you feel most comfortable with, at the price you're comfortable paying at. Just because a monitor is on sale, doesn't mean you can't find a better price (or a better model, for that matter). Keep in mind when selecting a monitor, that a 17 inch LCD really is 17 inches of viewable space, whereas a 19 inch CRT is something like 18 inches of viewable space (in most cases). So, your choice to go from a 17 to a 15 inch LCD can also be based on your comfort level with that as well.
Just so you know, I'm a CRT guy right now, still waiting for a cheap good gaming LCD (although, I really don't need it since the only game I play is WoW these days). The best LCD for gaming out these days costs over 2g's...
