A combination (and this is interesting because it confirms what I always say) of Right wing extremists, Muslim extremists from the banlieueus(suburbs) and Christian extremists from the country side, plus some more conservative politicians found each other in this shared sentiment against gay marriage.

This happens from time to time with other issues where otherwise natural opponents find themselves in the same march. Promoting the normalization of gay marriage is anti-conservative, so any traditionalist, conservative group will be opposed to it, as well as religions where homosexuality is proscribed (in Christianity since 312 AD Codex Theodosianus). The Christian moral response encoded Biblically is a reaction to ancient Roman vices.

There have often been unlikely allies. In the Reagan era, the anti-Porn moral majority crusaders banded together with the radical feminists in trying to link pornography to violence against women.
