Yeah, its amazing what they were able to do on the NES and SNES systems for music.
Megaman 2 had fantastic music. Metroid's music was super creepy in some areas, and set the tone really well. I'll never forget the Contra theme, Ghosts and Goblins, or the theme to Super Mario Bros.
Yeah, the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack was awesome. FFIV was pretty good for its time as well. Chrono Trigger was great, I especially loved the final Lavos battle theme. Square really had some impressive musical talent.
Getting to the PSX, Final Fantasy VIII may have been a few steps backward in story, mechanics, and character development quality, but the music makes me... emotional, especially the Balamb Garden theme, and the piano one that plays outside some minor area that uses some of the same melody... it is called "Ami" on the mp3 I have, but I am not sure that is correct.
If you haven't heard them, I recommend going to the Minibosses website, and downloading their NES song covers. It's pretty amusing to hear Castlevania played by real instruments. They should also have a link somewhere to the Jenova project-- a short lived band that has two Final Fantasy VI themes (Zozo, and Searching for Friends) for download. Those are both live, unfortunately, so there is some yelling and stuff in the background.
