Funny, the reply doesn't actually address why leading dot's are invalid, seeing as how the tech listed the dot as being a valid character.

Actually if you read the whole thing, it does state that you may not use leading or adjacent punctuation. It is probably a canned copy & paste response, but it does address the issue in so far as the issue will ever be addressed.
