Mr. Obama

I saw the link to and read comments on this on another forum. I've never heard of the World Net Daily, but from the article they have up, it seems to me that they are anti-Obama, so I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of their claims. Anyways, an interesting read nonetheless: Was Obama Born In America?

It doesn't really mean a whole lot to me either way, but would it affect his term?

WND is the internet version of the Enquirer. Or, the Anti-Pravda. The conspiracy theory about Obama not being born in Hawaii is a refuge fantasy for extreme right wing nut jobs. Look before you leap.

Those people are insane. Anyone who believes he was born anywhere other than Hawaii is insane.

I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of those people don't count Hawaii as the USA.

This is kinda funny. Some guy goes poking around the internet looking for similar images of the supposed Kenyan birth certificate and hit the jackpot.

Go ahead and compare the two, then draw your own conclusions.

Maybe if calling them the Sandwich Islands would make it more palatable to those people...

Sorry for the seemingly stupid question here, but even if Obama was born in Kenya wouldn't he still be a US citizen? This seems to indicate so.

http://travel.state.gov/law/info/info_609.html

Quote:Birth Abroad to One Citizen and One Alien Parent in Wedlock: A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301(g) INA provided the citizen parent was physically present in the U.S. for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child's birth. (For birth on or after November 14, 1986, a period of five years physical presence, two after the age of fourteen is required. For birth between December 24, 1952 and November 13, 1986, a period of ten years, five after the age of fourteen are required for physical presence in the U.S. to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child.

I mean, it's not like his mother stops being a US citizen the moment she (hypothetically) leaves US soil for a vacation.

I am finding this all way more fascinating than I should. We don't have this kind of political and extremist excitement up here in Canada. The closest we had was when our Prime Minister choked some dude at a protest and pretty much everything that Pierre Trudeau did.

The key part is;"For birth between December 24, 1952 and November 13, 1986, a period of ten years, five after the age of fourteen are required for physical presence in the U.S. to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child."[indent]If Obama was born August 4, 1961, and his mom was 18 at the time, she did not satisfy the requirement of 5 years after the age of fourteen. She is off by 3 months, so theoretically, if the Kenyan BC is accurate, then Obama was never naturalized properly. The grandparents could have placed the birth announcements as cover, and she might have flown him into the Hawaii. It would be interesting in that during the campaign, some accused McCain, who was born in Panama, of not being properly naturalized. There is a difference as well depending on how long your vacation. If you were born in the US, but left when you were 4, you'd only have 4 years of residency in the US. With McCain, just to be sure, Congress passed an Act declaring him to be a US citizen, so maybe they'd do something like that for Pres. Obama. Otherwise, it would be interesting to have Obama be the first non-citizen president of the US.

The part that doesn't jive is the eyewitness testimony of the attending nurse, but with a big enough payoff you can find someone to corroborate whatever story you want to make up.

Hi,

The point is that to be president, it is not sufficient to be a citizen. From Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President;.

The natural born phrase has some controversy attached to it. If you look about half way down the linked article, you'll see a brief discussion of some of the ramifications. As confusing as some of the cited cases are, it becomes even more confusing if only one parent is a US citizen.

At the very least, if there was any truth to the claim, it would do a great job of being another senseless distraction to the president, offering no value to anyone except a group of people who put their petty prejudices and politics ahead of the welfare of the nation. They, no matter where they were born, are the true aliens, and traitors to our culture and customs.

Wow, what a mess. I had no idea it could be this complicated. Good thing he really was born in the US, and has proven it.

For what it's worth, even die-hard right-wingers like Beck and Coulter think the whole "birther" thing is ridiculous. You know something's wrong when even the crazy people think you're crazy.

It hardly seems that the original intent of "natural born" would be to deny citizenship to the baby of a young American woman who happened to give birth abroad while she was away on a trip.

In a weird irony though, this is the same kind of underhanded political legalese that won Obama his Illinois seat where he dug in and had all his political opponents disqualified from the ballot.

FWIW, Pete, if there is truth to the claim that he isn't a citizen (and that's a tough accusation given the year and place of his birth, Hawaii a state at the time) then the simple facts would be:

1. He was not qualified to run
2. Joe Biden is your president
3. The Democratic party, from top to bottom, and particularly the DNC, are the biggest collection of idiots on the planet earth for missing that rather important detail.

The trouble with the whole deal, as I see it, is attempting to show that a guy born in Hawaii after it became a state in the Union isn't born in the US, and thus fully meeting the criterion. I don't understand how people are trying to dodge that small issue of where and when he was born.

As I understand the Berg character, who was running about with his hair on fire over this before the election, somebody is claiming that the records in Hawaii are fraudulent or incomplete.

I have yet to see that substantiated. I have doubts anyone ever will.

All other issues aside, this is indubitably true. One cannot have a low enough opinion of the organization that invented the circular firing squad. :D
