I would venture that very few/none of these athletes have the hand-eye co-ordination of professional athletes in other sports. Since I count this as being among the most important of one of the most important indicators of pure "natural athletic ability", I heistate to agree. On the other hand, as has been posted (and you pretty much seem to agree) it's pretty tough to, for instance, compare a marathon runner to a basketball player or wrestler.

Umm, personally I do not view Ice Dancing as a sport. Skill - yes, sport - no. In fact many of the Ice Dancers are failed pairs skaters, including some of the top names from the past. Kick 'em off the Olympics, I say!

The difference between pairs and ice dancing is that pairs requires jumps, while ice dancing requires a higher level of syncronization and technical form. There are hundreds of compulsory dances whose steps are choreographed and must be performed by two people exactly. Like a martial arts Kata.

I'm not fond of judged events either, including gymnastics, synchronized swimming, boxing, and diving.

Decathletes have to be all around superb athletes, speed and strength, sprint and distance. not specialists. Pentathletes have to be good shots, good fencers, and good horsemen.

Not sure how I feel about Olympic equestrian events. Who is getting the grade, the horse or the rider?

I assume you are referencing the famous doping incident of the Women German's Swim team of 1976. Since they were taking heavily loads of hormones, their bodies certainly were 'man like'.

But the modern German swim team is no different than swim teams from other countries. Take Anne Poleska for example, who won the 200 meter breaststroke in Athens 04.




I understand it was a joke, but it fell flat out of the starting gate.

Then came the post race interview with the gold medal winner.

The moron interviewer from NBC was pouring leading questions all over the ice. In 30 seconds, I was so disgusted that I turned off the TV, having seen the young lady handle this idiot with grace and patience. She's an all star in my book.

I second that sentiment. I felt even the NBC interview of Lindsey Jacobellis crossed a line. I too turned off the television, after watching them practically bring her to tears. I'm sure the opinions over Lindsey Jacobellis differ on the lounge, but I still feel at the end of the day it was wrong of NBC to lay her out on national television.

It was the EAST German swimming team! They kept up that tradition until the end in Seoul in 1988. The East German athletes in the German Team after 1989 often had trouble, IIRC the name you should look for is Kristin Otto in her active days, biiig muscles.

I hate the NBC style sports coverage. Dick Ebersol is aptly named.

Im not interested in most Olympic events, but thanks to the human interest focused coverage NBC has perfected I dont even watch events i like.

Fortunetly NBC is getting #$%&ty ratings this year. Maybe in time a better format will develope where we can more easily see the events we like and skip the insperational stories.

The few event I do like I would happily watch with no voice overs or even amature voice overs.

They are close enough to naked to attract lecherous fans. Naked might not work as well when things start flopping about during triple axels. The clothing serves to keep the presentation smooth and well packaged.

Was that comment really needed? whyBish's post opened my eyes to something I hadn't noticed. If a post of a similar nature was made by a new member, I'd be itching to tell them to shape up or ship out. Instead, I draw the line a bit further for older and more frequent posters on the lounge. The upshot of bringing this all up is simple, I think we've all become rather relaxed here. Although it can be a good thing, it isn't a good thing when it spills over into swearing or questionable posts.

I hope its apparent I'm not meaning this squarely at you Doc, although you are the most recent 'offender'. I'm certain that I too have made a number of questionable posts in my time. As whyBish already pointed out, we all adhere to the idea, "Keep it clean. It's PG-13 here".

We could all benefit from tightening up, just a little bit.
