I tried starting a poll, and I guess I do not have the "uber 1337 privz" in order to do so. Therefore, I will create my own "poll post"
the question is:
Hardcore or Softcore? and no, im not talking about porn. :P
give a good reason why you play one or the other, or perhaps both?
I play hardcore, not because I think im better than someone, but merely because I enjoy the "rush" you get when encountering a big battle, only to escape with a few life left and know you came REAL close to losing it. It gets the blood pumping to my toes. That and a lot less 12 year olds play hardcore, possibly because they can not handle it? I dunno. I would rather play with mature people. This is NOT a flame post. I want opinions, and I'm not going to try to sway anyone. There is a drawback to playing hardcore, the pker's are more skilled, and there seems to be a higher ratio of pks to players than on softcore.
just my 2 pennies.

I ply softcore, mainly because I don't like loosing characters. The fun for me is building up characters, I play slowly, and I have a lot of different types so it takes longer to get them to high levels, so loosing one would really hurt.

The gloves come off, I'm playing hardball. It's fourth and 15 and you're looking at a full-court press. (Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun)

I play softcore.
There are several reasons. First and foremost, I am always interested in new builds/styles of character. I want to try oddball things and see if I can make them work. The last thing I want is to have to start my character over again just because I found out the hard way that 'this tactic doesn't work anymore in Hell'.
Maybe it is because I bore easily too. I just cannot imagine playing the same characters over and over again as I re-build. I tend to get a character to Patriarch/Matriarch status and then move on to something new.
I lack the time to spend on this game that others do, as well. So the time commitment of hardcore just appalls me, what with that 'start
all over again if you screw up' basis.
And, lastly, I have children in my house. This means that there can and always will be 'surprise' interruptions in my gaming. The thought that this might not only lead to the untimely ending of one of my own characters, but possibly those of my companions who are looking to me for support is something I could not tolerate.
And you may call it righteousness

I play hardcore because I think I'm better than everyone.
Well, actualy I play both but I prefer hardcore. I think death should actualy mean something. Yes, crap happens. But that's life! I mean, if you die in softcore, all you have lost is some gold and experience. Sure, it's a lot of exp at higher levels, but to me that's not a big deal- nothing compared to losing your whole character. I think the threat of losing everything makes me play better and also encourages people to work together. (Not always though) Which is why I enjoyed hardcore a lot when 1.10 first came out. Before all the uber l33t soloers came out to be.
Another reason is that I don't play characters for that long. After a certain point, I'll start a new character anyways. I'll continue to optimize my existing characters, but that's about it. I'm also one to mule up items and magic find so if one of my characters should hit the dust, I'll be putting my muled items to use faster. It's sort of a inheritance trove. I've only lost one character, and that was just some random level 13 character that I screwed up on. I decided to use him as a guniea pig for some dueler.
Of course, if you have a crappy connection, softcore is recomended. I would play that when my connection acts up. :Sometimes I play hardcore with an unstable connection just to be really "hardcore"* :)
