How do gambling costs increase as clvl increases?
#1
I did a search, but didn't find the information for which I'm asking below:

As you level, does the cost of gambling most items go up in a fixed progression for each clvl gained (ie: % of some base figure, % increase on costs at the previous level, ...)? If so, what is the progression in gambling costs for items other than rings and ammies? Are there non-linear changes or discontinuities in how the cost of gambling increases as character level increases?

Thank you in advance for any help provided.

New info given below, and some confusion, based on a short experiment.

I recorded prices for three different items for a character gambling at level 73. Then I recorded prices for those exact same three items when that character advanced to level 74. Here is what I found:

gambling costs for normal gloves ...
lvl 73: 40650 gold
lvl 74: 41533 gold
increase in costs: 883 gold
% increase over lvl 73: 2.17220%

gambling costs for a light belt ...
lvl 73: 37816 gold
lvl 74: 38814 gold
increase in costs: 998 gold
% increase over lvl 73: 2.63909%

gambling costs for chain mail armor ...
lvl 73: 138657 gold
lvl 74: 143073 gold
increase in costs: 4416 gold
% increase over lvl 73: 3.18484%

Essentially, it seems that there isn't a uniform percentage increase in costs of gambling, per level, for each item. I can't help wondering if there are also differences in incremental gambling cost increases across levels, in addition to differences across items. Or, perhaps, there's a random element in the mix somewhere.

So that this can be replicated, I'll mention that my character was not using Gheed's fortune or an "edge" runeword bow. She had nothing exceptional on her that would have altered vendor or gambling prices in any way.

She wasn't wearing a quilted armour, was she? Those are quite... revealing and may mess with the vendor prices.

Heiho,

I never was much into that gambling and shopping stuff, but since there's a mechanism for calculating shopping prices I'd guess gamble cost is based on the highest possible affix your character could get when he/she would go shopping instead of gambling.

But I could be dead wrong here.

She was wearing a "stealth" armor, an exceptional studded leather (I forget the name). I do want to assure everybody that my sorceress would never stoop t o such tricks to lower prices. Especially given that there is no coding for "stooping" in D2. :whistling:

This thread has over 150 reads, so perhaps I'm not the only person curious about this issue. I'll put a few more pieces of information up.

Additional information given below:

ordinary gloves
lvl 73 character: 40650 gold 40650 883 2.12602%
lvl 74 character: 41533 gold 41533 1498 3.48121%
lvl 75 character: 43031 gold 43031 1528 3.42916%
lvl 76 character: 44559 gold 44559 909 1.99921%
lvl 77 character: 45468 gold 45468 1562 3.32128%
lvl 78 character: 47030 gold 47030

light belt
lvl 73 character: 37816 gold 37816 998 2.57124%
lvl 74 character: 38814 gold 38814 1576 3.90196%
lvl 75 character: 40390 gold 40390 1604 3.81959%
lvl 76 character: 41994 gold 41994 1027 2.38721%
lvl 77 character: 43021 gold 43021 1647 3.68720%
lvl 78 character: 44668 gold 44668

chain mail
lvl 73 character: 138657 gold 138657 4416 3.08654%
lvl 74 character: 143073 gold 143073 6549 4.37703%
lvl 75 character: 149622 gold 149622 6682 4.27500%
lvl 76 character: 156304 gold 156304 4539 2.82201%
lvl 77 character: 160843 gold 160843 6873 4.09800%
lvl 78 character: 167716 gold 167716

If the above table turns out in a readable format, I'll just explain that the percentages refer to the incremental (%) change from the figure given on the same row as the amount of gold the item costs at a particular character level, compared to the gold amount given on the next row down. The number (3 or 4 digits in length) given to the left of the percentage figure is the incremental amount of gold needed to gamble the relevant item (normal gloves, a light belt, or chain mail) once your character goes up one level.
